Am I the only with mixed emotions on Vernon? I feel like he was lights out on the cup run but then was one of the lead contributors of the playoff chokes in the following seasons. We may have been a timely save or two away from long playoff runs in the early 90's.

You aren't the only one. He was excellent in 1986 and 1989. The other years, I often felt he was what was holding a dominant team back.

That said, no other goalie had two deep runs into the playoffs.

I agree. There weren’t really any consistently ‘dominant’ goalies in the 80s.

Roy was really the first …but that was towards the end of the decade.

Vernon was great when the team in front of him played well in the defensive zone, and like most goalies, so-so if they didn't.

After the '89 win, the Flames' players seemed to stop caring about goals against, and some of their best defensive players (Ramage and Loob especially) were replaced by guys who thought that was someone else's department (notably Makarov). It was most noticeable on the PK, which was one of the worst in the league in '89-90.

No goalie would have looked good behind that team. They remained high in the standings as long as they had enough talent to out-score their mistakes.

Vernon is my #1 simply because of the cup.

My quick scan of this thread for Jason Muzzatti seems to be coming up empty. Unsettling.

I know what you mean. But if doesn't come up huge in game 7 OT vs. Canucks, there is no SC banner at the Saddledome.

No numbers to support it at all ... but I always like Rick Tabbaracci. Maybe it was his gear? Maybe he won a few when I was at the dome? Thought he was solid.

Also wonder what Roloson would have looked like numbers wise with more time in Calgary. Had a pretty solid career. Even got himself hurt to avoid an Edmonton cup!

He was exciting and athletic for sure. Also probably the coolest name we’ve had in net.

my bad he is tied for 5th- sorry I made an erroneous claim- but he played in a no tie era. he's probably bound for 5th anyways but a guy like Wamsley is 10 wins behind him, but had 15 ties- who knows how that might have played out.Turek who is tied with Rittich, had 20 ties as a Flame

Don't discount the name. He would be on my all time Flames top 10 names.

Tabby was a bright spot in a very dark time.

Glad to see Rick Tabaracci getting some love in here. Started watching hockey around this time and he was my favourite goaltender from this era (along with Freddie). Everything from the split saves, to the Tabby chants and to that sick helmet he rocked.

The Flames have a top two -
1. Kipper
2.Vernon

Otherwise the list is very embarrassing. I have faith that Markstrom will make it a top 3.
