I said the flames will struggle to breach 200 goals as a team. I stand by it. It doesn’t look to promising of a prediction at the moment but it’s one that I will support with integrity because I posted it for all to see and won’t move the goal posts to lessen my shame in being wrong.

You say that as if you expected a medal for being stubborn.

Someone pointed out that for the Flames to finish under 200 GF, they would have to score at a pace of 2.16 goals per game for the rest of the season. Do you know how many teams scored 2.16 goals per game or less last year?

Zero.

The year before? One. The Detroit Red Wings averaged 2.04, and finished last in the league by 23 points.

The year before that? Zero.

Basically, you are saying that the Flames are going to be the worst offensive team in the league for the rest of the year, and you are saying it for no other reason than that you refuse to back down from an unwise prediction.

Anyone calling the Flames schedule soft hasn't been paying attention.

Look at the combined records of all the teams the Flames played. Last year's records don't mean #### either.

Not to mention a road heavy schedule with two long eastern road trips.

I’m not trying to look smart. I am enjoying the hockey. I’m just not convinced they are for real and their psychological issues as a group have been healed yet. Colorado destroyed this teams confidence for 2 season after that playoff loss.

Let’s beat the dragon before we anoint ourselves as triumphant is what I’m saying.

You went straight from ‘Yes, I did say something in regards to fragility’ to ‘You don’t want to have productive discussion with me’. The latter statement in no way follows from the former, or from anything else that you said previously, and as such is a non sequitur.

I am prepared to have a productive discussion with you, but I am losing hope that such a thing is possible.

By making blanket statements about the board, you are making a fallacious attack on all the members of CP. That is a straightforward ad hominem.

I too will seek out other definitions as well but from what I have come to understand about that phrase it’s a personal effect. This is the first I have heard of it being otherwise.

Here’s Merriam Webster
 https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ad%20hominem
No mention of blanket statements towards groups. The Latin translates literally “ to the person”.

Regarding my comment : I don’t think the flames have played very good teams during this run. I’m holding out hope that this momentum can carry them to better results versus the better teams.

Yes, saying “my prediction was bad” is soooooo wormlike. It’s neither backtracking nor moving the goalposts.

And no, it wasn’t paraphrasing the whole post. It was taking issue with that statement.

It’s been shown that only one team in three years has scored at a pace that would make your prediction come true. And that team finished dead last. With those odds you could also predict Arizona will win the cup and refuse to move from that prediction lest you be a “worm”.

I won’t worm out of responsibility for my comments. I made a prediction and it’s still to be determined no matter how bleak it may appear.

I will still take the bet with someone or many. I will donate to CP if that’s the agreed upon stake.

No one is saying you would be backing out of responsibility, FFS. We all agree you didn’t attempt to rewrite your prediction.

What you are doing is trying to explain away why it’s not coming true, by using your own definition of soft schedule and ignoring the toughness of the road trip. If these teams are so easy to beat, why do they generally have a winning record?

November is almost over and the Flames have 3 regulation losses....if you can't enjoy that because it might mean you were wrong get a new hobby.

I’m not rewriting my prediction. I’m standing by it still despite it being more tenuous now than when I said it.

And not all people agree I’d argue. Many people are just happy to pile on. It’s fine. I looked crossly at the sacred cow.

The toughness of the road trip is difficult to argue for. So many have only been citing the kilometres travelled. No one is citing the quality of competition and if they are they are missing points such as injuries and roster complications most of which the flames have avoided this year. I will take the wait and see approach about the records of New Jersey, Buffalo, philly, Ottawa, Detroit at the end of the year before I use those wins as any sort of galvanizing effort.

I haven’t seen even one person cite KM travelled. Games played within a short time span? Yes. Back to backs? Yes. Teams with winning records? Yes. Last year PO teams? Yes.

Every team has injuries. You take your opponent as you find them. And most of those depleted rosters still had their best players. If Calgary was missing Lewis, Richardson and Zadorov we wouldn;t complain about our “depleted roster”.

Ok I try to apprise myself of as many of the opinions in the thread before I post. Many people are using the distance as some sort of badge of merit. It’s in this thread.

Those are false equivalencies of comparison you’re using about injuries. I said Crosby and malkin. I said NYI top four defence and their top PWF. Ottawa didn’t have their top center and top goal scorer who owned the flames last year.

If we were missing OK, tanev, Rasmus and hanifin. Maybe. If it were lindy and Johnny? Maybe but your comparisons were our depth players.
