Yeah, sadly companies aren't spending millions of dollars to put their name on a building only to give people a way to refer to the building without saying the sponsor's name.
Our best chance of getting something mildly unique might be if Scotiabank is the sponsor because they already have Scotiabank Arena in Toronto and Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, and the arena in Ottawa used to be Scotiabank Place.
Rogers is another one that's maxed out.
If it ends up being Telus, there's hope they might go for something unique like they did with Telus Spark.

Any name that doesn't include Rogers will be more than fine by me. I've come to really dislike that organization.

No kidding. They are still using shots of Dome that are years old missing Telus Sky and Brookfield Place. I can just imagine the hand wringing at Rogers knowing they will have to spend a couple of bucks on new sky view shots of downtown.

Since it's half underground, they should go with "The Basement". Then let Chicken on the Way be the sponsor.

You see this often with projects. There's a prestige international designer and then a local partner whether an architecture/design firm or developer comes in and cost manages the building to hell.
One that comes to mind for me is West Village Towers which was designed by NORR Dubai Yahya Jan but when I checked out the interior, Cidex completely cheaped out and it feels like a University dorm.
Edmonton went with Teeple Architects in Toronto for their library and you can tell they are trying to hide the cost-cut exterior as 90% of the images they have on their website about this project are all about the interior. http://www.teeplearch.com/portfolio/...brary-renewal/

Usually an international firm would bring on a local partner to stick handle local bylaws/dealing this the city etc... But also they need someone registered in Alberta to stamp and sign all the schedules and drawings. In this case, it's a little strange because HoK has a Calgary office.

Rodeo related I understand. But what's wrong with an agriculture related name?

I've always liked the western theme in Calgary. So many cities have literally zero feel other than just a place with buildings where many people live.

Corral really fits IMO. Has that comic book esque double consonant match: Calgary Corral. Also has the heritage of the real corral, the western theme and tie to the stampede/ rodeo, and is generally an acceptable term for an entertainment venue. It would be a shame not to go back to this.

I'd prefer to move on from a western-themed name, but if it does end up being one (an appropriate, non-cheesy one), I wouldn't complain about it.

I think it would be more appropriate to name the Flames' new arena's ice rink after Ken King, just like what NBA teams (example: Larry H. Miller Court at Vivint Arena [Utah] and Rich and Helen DeVos Court at Amway Center [Orlando]) and NCAA MBB (examples: Cremins Court at McCamish Pavilion [Georgia Tech] and Coach K Court at Cameron Indoor Stadium [Duke]) teams are doing.
I believe we'll be the first NHL to do such honour if this plan becomes a reality.

Corral is not even "western themed" corral is an agricultural term and Calgary is smack dab in the middle of the region in Alberta where food is produced. It's an economic term. Like the brewers, or the Steelers, or the Roughnecks. Calling it the corral doesn't mean its going to have wagon wheels and cowboy silhouette all over the place. Its a nod an an important economic sector and the history of the club.

We need a public naming competition.
Get the naming sponsor and then let the fans decide the rest.
If theres one thing that is for certain, fan-naming competitions never go awry. Its one of the basic principles of democracy that the ignorant masses know whats best for them.

The only Cowboy-esque, angular and oblong object that the arena vaguely resembles would be a chuckwagon stove.

That's all great, but it's still a 'western-themed' word to most people.
