Friend of mine played pickup in a game against Ranford and scored twice on him in breakaways. Ranford broke his stick on the net after the second.

I've never seen fans of a team try so hard to discredit a shut out by a goaltender on a team they cheer for.
Yikes.
Who cares how busy his night was, he posted a shut out. That's a good thing right?

Well I’m pretty sure the dump I took this morning would have pitched a shut out last night.

See people are more worried about being "right" than anything else. Markstrom is an elite goalie at or near the top of the league.

He is for now.
I'm not going to give the victory lap to the other side either.
Injury related or not he was pretty weak for half his starts last season. If he can prove that was aberration by keeping that consistency for the whole season then yeah he's elite (clearly he won't keep the shut out string going).

There shouldn't be sides...he was elite in Vancouver too, numbers not as flashy because the team is so bad. Ask Demko.
Just thank baby Jesus the Oilers didn't get him.

First of all, I am not trying to take anything away from Markstrom - he was perfect last night, and you can't ask for more than that.
However, this is just another example of how misleading high danger chances can be. While the totals may be close, the quality was not. Two empty net tap-ins, that no goalie could possibly stop, a perfectly executed breakaway that no goalie is going to stop, a cross seam pass to Tkachuk who had all kinds of time to pick his spot.
Buffalo had no chances that were as dangerous as those 4 chances.
Not all high danger chances are created equal.
Non the less, another stellar performance from Markstrom and the Flames' defensive play. When 6 of your 9 wins are shutouts, it's a lot more than just a hot goalie, it's a team playing well and the goalie fitting perfectly into the system.

There are no sides, unless you want to manufacture them.
Literally everyone here wants Markstrom to do well.
Some people are just overly sensitive to any suggestion that Markstrom might have had a few easy nights.
He can't control how easy his night is, only on making the saves he should be making. He does that, everyone is happy with his performance.
When Markstrom makes those saves, the Flames win. Although in the Flyers game, where he did make all those saves, but the Flames lost for reasons outside his control.
There are nights where a goalie allows 3+ goals, that are virtually unsaveable barring Hasek-esque craziness, and there are nights where a goalie pitches a shutout but did not have to slide post-to-post or have their glove or blocker challenged. Acknowledging the type of night is not "discrediting" the performance. Over the long run, consistency is what matters.
All anyone wants is for him to make the saves he needs to make consistently, and maybe have the occasional night where the team bails him out equal to the occasional night where he bails the team out of their drunken stupor. He does that, and you can win a Stanley Cup with the 200-foot style of hockey this team plays.

Well definitely nobody has said they are all created equal. Of course Flames chances were much more dangerous. Still wasn't an easy night.
Buffalo had some really good chances in the third and Markstrom shut the door.
Just laughable that anytime Markstrom has a shutout it's called an easy night by his detractors.

I think it would actually reflect poorly on the goalie if a low-event, low-shot game against one of the worst teams in the league, featuring precisely 0 threatening players was a struggle.
The Flames were supposed to dummy the Sabres - they did.
Markstrom was supposed to shut them out - he did.
By the standards of an elite NHL goalie, that was a pretty easy shutout.
The coach said so.
“Didn’t have much work until the 3rd period, very few chances other than power play, that’s what he’s supposed to do: make saves and cover pucks.”
And Darryl didn’t even open with “flawlessly executed” to describe his performance.

The numbers are the numbers...if he keeps them up he will be in the running for the Vezina.
Bottom line Markstrom has been elite so far. It's not like recent Vezina winners played on bad teams.

This just isn't true.
Also, I am not a detractor - I was one of the most positive posters on CP when we acquired him - huge fan.
I don't think it detracts from him in any way to say that he was perfect last night, and also that the defensive effort was also stellar, which kept the really difficult saves to a controllable level.

It certainly wasn't the toughest night but supposed to shut them out? Markstrom is the first goalie to shut them out this season.

I don't think there is any question that he has been elite so far this year. We could count the weak goals on one hand, and might still have some fingers to spare.

I don’t think any goalie is expected to shut out the other team.

This team should’ve shut out the Buffalo Sabres, and they did. They outclassed them in every way. They were up 5-0 after two, and preserved the donut for their goalie.
Just the way you draw it up.

Darryl Sutter said as much to the assembled media, with cameras running.
You’re the one who took it personally.

Good lord, the shutout didn’t just happen in the third period. I’m talking about the whole night, and the expectations going in. Yes, Calgary is a much better team. But so is TB, Washington, Pittsburgh, Boston, Toronto and even Edmonton.
It wasn’t a shutout where he faced 40 shots or something, but I dare say most shutouts are at least partly because of great team defence. It’s still true that right around one of every ten shots gets in on most goalies. It didn’t happen last night.
