Sports broadcasters have been fired for saying racist things on the air for decades, long before the term "cancel culture" ever entered the collective consciousness. Are our memories so short that we're forgetting about Al Campanis and Jimmy the Greek? The remarkable thing about Don Cherry isn't that he was finally fired for making racist comments about immigrants, the remarkable thing is that he was previously given so many second chances while other broadcasters who spouted similar garbage were not. If Don Chery being fired for being racist is an example of the new-fangled cancel culture that right wingers are losing their minds over, that's pretty weaksauce.

It was racist. It sounded racist to me because it was singling people out like my parents who came to this country 50 years ago for not wearing a poppy or not caring about what the Canadian armed forces did for our great country.

If he would have said you Canadians need to start buying more poppies nobody would have batted an eye. But that's not what he said. He singled out immigrants.

It does seem like a trans woman goes through different challenges than a biological one.

Their lived experience is different.

I’m completely in favour of doing whatever we need to make sure the suicide rate of trans kids isn’t 40% higher than heteronormative ones.

Anyone who does violence to or otherwise harasses a trans person because of their own ignorance and hate deserves the full weight of the law to come down on them.

But if trans women and women were the same, they’d be the same.

It’s not an easy thing for a lot of people to wrap their minds around, and when they struggle while making an honest good faith attempt to understand, they can very quickly be branded as transphobic.

In the face of that, lots of people will throw up their hands and stop trying, which I don’t think is the goal - empathy cuts both ways.

Maybe, but that difference is inconsequential and irrelevant to what she was talking about. It is, in fact, irrelevant to almost everything aside from their own personal medical care.
