I think the problem is the GT title had French in it. Can't be expecting a win under those circumstances.

He has been good defensively lately...ask Darryl

I don't expect him to be Bobby Orr, he is fine for a bottom pair

Most of the time two goals isn't enough. No team should rely on their goalie getting a shutout or only allowing one goal to win. Just like Tuesday I think they just expected to win rather than work for it.

That's not to say I don't think he should have had it. He made a mistake thinking Suzuki wouldn't try to bank it off him and wanted to cover the other post quicker. But I was more pissed off at the gong show that lead to the chance. The puck should have been in Montreal's zone.

It's a 107 point pace. That gets you in the playoffs every time, full stop.

Problem is, this early in the season and your pace and record change quickly. Lose the next two and you are at a 93 point pace which is uh oh territory.

Which just underlines the point that the hot start was good, very good really but the team has accomplished exactly nothing. It's a long season.

I was thinking the same thing when the lines were released for tonight. Pretty surprised Zadorov was still in and Valimaki out. Proof is in the pudding.

Agreed.

But every game has its own story. If you go into the third period with a 2-1 lead, you might pick up an insurance goal as the opponent is pressing. They then get a late goal to make it 3-2 but it's too little too late.

Or maybe an empty-netter. Yesterday the Sharks won 4-1 but it was basically a 2-1 game.

Even with Ramo or Johnson in net, we've won those games before.

Markstrom needs to better. He's lost a handful of games which were tied or led during the 2nd or 3rd period. Not really a recipe for success.

Tonight the Flames took a 2-1 lead and turned that into a 3-2 regulation loss. That's different from getting down 3 ealry on and then only scoring two the rest of the way - because of how the opponent plays offensively.

It's not just on him. The whole team needs to be better. This isn't the team scoring 3-5 goals and still losing because he let in 2-3 goals he should have had. Yes, Ramo and Johnson have won those 1-0, 2-1 games. Every goalie has at one point. I would still take Markstrom over both any day. The guy has four shutouts already and even though they weren't 1-0 shutouts where the team got dominated he still came up big at times. The amount of goals a team scores in a shutout isn't necessarily the amount of goals they would have scored had their goalie not stopped everything. Even in the OT losses he made stops on breakdowns that had he not they don't even get a point.

I remember you saying or something similar to that you don't expect him to be perfect but yes you do.

Markstrom himself said he needed to make a save, he knows the third goal was a stinker

If he can own up to it, why argue about it?

The argument isn't about the goal itself. It's about two goals being enough.

Two goals isn’t enough in general, but some nights it has to be

If you don't want to be a good team, yes this is true.

Would Zadarov be in the league if he was 6'0" instead of 6'6"? I certainly don't think so.

He was skating with the puck completely free of pressure from the opposition and gave it away - and his inability to handle the puck at all is on display every night. He provides no net benefit to the team.

Sure, but last night the team should have been able to score more than two. I wouldn't say they were shut down by Allen. It was another piss poor effort in the third where they just expected good things to happen.

I really hope this was a classic case of looking past the 3-10 team to the Leafs on a back to back.

I actually think there is enough individual talent on this team to mask awful games. Markstrom being number 1. Guys like Tkachuk, Gaudreau up there too. But just about everyone was garbage.

I find this, and the San Jose game kind of interesting. I think the Flames identity is already out there. You better be in for a hard working game, or it's not going to go well for you. Depleted teams like San Jose and Montreal are looking for anything to rally around, they're not going to out talent anybody so they're ready to dig in for a good hardworking game. Problem for the Flames was that they weren't ready for that same game. These 2 games and the Nashville game were polar opposites.

Really need to get back to it. They're in a weird funk.

I blame GioforPM for putting French in the GT title.

The team should have scored, and Markstrom should have held his post

It took the whole team working together to leave without points last night

And I agree. That's why I made my thoughts on the goal clear on my original response to GranteedEV. So that there was no confusion that I didn't think he should have had it.

Jack Eichel is a Golden Knight. He was never going to be a Flame.

(Hopefully that helps eliminate the random Eichel comments in every thread)

Game sucked. Good teams tend to avoid losing 3 in a row in regulation. We'll see tonight.

There were some positives from last night even in the loss.

Biggest issue last night is the top line had what was easily their worst game of the season

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk:
31,8% Corsi For
17.3% xGF%

Which is not a recipe for success for this team.

But I'd argue the 2nd and 3rd lines were promising.

Mangiapane-Monahan-Coleman
73.3% Corsi For
78.3% xGF
1 GF - 0 GA

Dube-Backlund-Lewis
78.5% Corsi For
59.7 xGF
1 GF - 0 GA

So some promising numbers from the new 2nd and 3rd line. If the top line would have had their usual performance last night would have probably been a different game.

Also no clue how PPs were 5-1 last night and felt like Montreal got away with a lot of obstruction.
