none of the high-end players are going to Newcastle at this point, I think you're way off here. The likes of Tarkowski and Lingard, sure, but it'll take a couple of years of growth before they can attract the really big fish.

I guess time will tell, but I think money talks. I remember Manchester City signing Robinho for massive money right after they got taken over by their current ownership group. If they get relegated, it will be tougher to attract the big fish, but I don't see them holding back with the cheque book.

But everyone has money now. And if the money is close then players will choose the better clubs, in the better cities, playing in the better competitions. Newcastle might have to significantly overpay to get even quality players, let alone world class ones. And I really believe if they don't come right back up they are screwed at that point because hiding the FFP cheating is significantly harder in year two in the Championship. At least in year one you have the relegation golden parachute money.

You get 55% of the previous year's prize money in your first year in the Championship, followed by 45%, followed by 20% in year three, so a second year in the Championship isn't going to kill them.

I do agree that getting marquee players to sign for Newcastle is going to be tougher than getting them to sign for a London club, but Manchester and Liverpool are not exactly exotic vacation destinations. Frankly, the area around Anfield and Goodison Park is one of the worst areas in all of Britain, and that's saying something.

Manchester City were cute with how they were able to pump up their revenues in order to bring in big name players, and despite getting caught repeatedly, they managed to avoid major punishment. They were banned from Europe for a year but managed to appeal it after offering to pay a larger fine. These new Newcastle owners will do the same, stuff like signing commercial sponsorships with their other Saudi owned entities that would far exceed the market value Newcastle normally get.

For all the mockery we may have given him over the years it's hard to deny that Moyes isn't doing amazing work right now, they look fantastic.

So you think some of those big name players are making the decision to play for a possible relegation team? And are they signing in with a decent chance of playing in the Championship? I highly doubt it. Once they get back up and have a chance to win things, it’s a different story. But until then, regardless of it being free, you’re not likely bringing in big international talents.

Money will get some good players for them but if they drop down to the champ I totally agree they will be severely limited. I think the January window is their chance to grab 2 or 3 stars while they are still up. The problem with the FFP rules is that Newcastle have already been spending a lot of what they are entitled to, and I don't know how they will increase revenues substantially enough to increase their spend, look at their last 5 or 6 seasons, they've been spending, just badly.

Weird day today... the Arsenal goal, there was what appeared to be a certain foul on Sarr right before and I found it really odd, the PBP team didn't even talk about it, it was like they were purposefully avoiding it for some reason. Ball was gone and Sarr got flattened, maybe they thought he dove was all I could think?

And the Alisson one looked like a foul to me too based on how they have called it historically but on that one maybe they are going to open it up to more contact on the keeper on corners. The WH player goes up and makes a valid challenge for the ball but threw his arms back and knocked the keeper to the ground.

Newcastle is probably good enough now to yo yo back up to the prem - they are better than Norwich. They could probably keep most of their players too. Get a couple of high end loans for next season, buy a few top championship players and you are back up in no time.

They should grow smart, try to buy talented kids offering them a chance to play right away for EPL money. I hope they do it the dumb way and buy a bunch of over priced agin talent

Players are important but club atmosphere/structure and management are critical. Sunderland have better players than anyone in league one and can't get back up. Qpr was going into the champ with a team full of internationals and failing. the weight of heavy expectation and a bad manager are a toxic mix for a relegated team. That said I expect the toon to save their season this year with so many teams looking bad early.

If I has to bet right now I would say burnley and Norwich are going down for sure and brentford or watford will be the third. But lots of time left to run

If I'm Newcastle I try to poach Italy and Spain.

Neither league is in that good of shape financially, go into those leagues and buy good young talent.

I agree-there must be some overpriced talent you can get on loan who will improve the team in January and save some wages for a team dealing with money issues.

These aren’t long term buys, buthopefully enough to avoid relegation.

I’m actually a fan of older players who can still play but have been supplanted by a young star. They have desire to show they’ve still got it, and the skills. Only issue is challenge to tell if they’ve still got it.

That's a good move for him.

He's done everything he can at Rangers, he wasn't going from there to a top 6 club, if he shows well at Villa for a few years, I bet he makes a.step up

Villa are in a good position to do well

Fergie relegated him in 06-07 with already champions United getting beat by West Ham on the final day.

Best of it all, it turned out that Tevez who scored the winner wasn't even owned by West Ham and wasn't eligible to play.

Norwich apparently set to announce Dean Smith as next manager, officially unemployed for what, one week?
