I will never apologize for being one of the people chanting "Ricci's ugly".

I always love these weird “I’m not defending their actions, but just remember we’ve all done terrible things” posts that crop up with these events. No, I’m pretty confident I’ve never done that or anything remotely similar to that, so, I’m gonna keep on judging.
Judge the people doing it all you want. Those students and any responsible adults in that building deserve it.

When people start generalizing about everyone that lives there, then the outrage is losing the moral high ground IMO. I am happy to see the strong response from the respectable people in Penn.

Surprised the team didn’t do something. If I was playing on a team with a female goalie and some a$$ wholes where making her cry like that I’d take my skates off and head into the stands.

The young lady that had to hear that, I hope she took it in stride. She has put herself in a position to piss off some naysayers. Jealousy is a cruel bitch. Thick skin always wins.

Disgusting and I'm glad the students are banned. Definitely not a case of a few bad apples. Hope a bunch of them get named and shamed.

Unfortunately we still live in a world where women are subjected to this kind of abuse based on their body parts. I'm disgusted at this, but not at all surprised.

Hope she Took it in stride?? She broke down in tears after the second period

And why should the expectation be that the victims need to have thick skin? I really hope you’re not insinuating that the girl is at fault or should expect to hear these awful things for “putting herself in a position”

It’s the 50-60 students/parents of the rival school that’s at fault here. Not her

Glad they are doing what they can to make these girls feel supported, glad they are bringing the hammer down on these guys as hard as is reasonable. We need to cut down on the social acceptance of these things.

Yous all need to get off your horses a little bit .
These things are nothing alike.

A young woman among 1000’s of men who are screaming whore and suck my dick is very, very different from being called ugly.

It’s literal sexual harassment and very threatening on top of that, who knows what some clown does if he decides to take it one step further.

hopefully the goalie can find joy again in playing hockey

That's the worst part. The game wasn't stopped, the parents and other adults did nothing at all.

If I started chanting that stuff I would have been put in line so damn fast by my parents.

Teenagers brains are still developing, and they are still learning - mainly from the adults around them. While I condemn the actions of those chanting those vile things and definitely agree that they need a harsh punishment. I think the adults at the arena are just as culpable. As adults, especially parents, it is our job to help guide and teach the younger generation. I find it appalling that not a single adult intervened.

After the Chicago conversation, perhaps worth considering that some other people could have intervened, in some manner

The ref could have stopped the game. Her coach could have taken the team off the ice. The other coach could have taken the other team off the ice They have a PA in an arena, no? Some kind of announcement / statement demanding it stop

It all involves thinking outside of the box, and deciding to act

Just disgusting behaviour by the fans, and I would hope the outcome is not just the suspension, but the encouragement of others to think of how they may help

At least the league commissioner noted the game should have been stopped. Hopefully it results in policy to protect the players and stop it from happening again

As a USA Hockey Ref, it is our obligation to stop the game and to facilitate having those spectators removed from the game. The clock keeps running... and those spectators may face additional sanctions from the governing body. USA Hockley strongly recommends that a volunteer monitor is in place at these games to help monitor situations, and intervene prior to the situation escalating. This should never have been allowed to happen or to continue. This is rule 626 in the USA Hockey Casebook, and it highly stressed at every training session.

Unreal. I can't believe no one did anything. I can't even imagine a scenario where I don't become Randy Marsh in that arena and start something with those involved.

As someone mentioned this is in rural PA. Not exactly known for progressiveness. I think they call it Pennsyltucky. Anything that’s not Philly or Pitt is deep red territory.

Stopping the game likely would have delayed the klan rally scheduled for after the game. Hell, it is probably all the same people and hosted in the same arena.

a few years ago in one of our men's league games the wife of one of the guys was on a tear. she was ticked off at the ref about a call and started beaking and wouldn't stop.... and it was looooud!
eventually the ref had enough and waited until "her team" and a great scoring chance (breakaway? 2 on 1? i can't remember) and he blew the play dead. he pointed at her and yelled, "OUT!"
she told him to f-off or something so he went to the bench of the team 'she belonged to' and told the captain, "you've got 1 minute to get her out of here or else you're team is going to be short handed until she leaves!" her husband and a couple other players quickly jumped off the bench, headed her way and told her to get lost. that really set her off (which was, i admit, spectacular to witness) but she did leave. was it bad that we did the 'stick bang' as she did the walk of shame out of the arena??

anyways - all that to say, yea - the ref could have done something too. i still can't believe the students were chanting that - wow. the whole situation is pretty sad and waaaaaaay over the line.

This world is a terrible place. I'm not saying she's at fault at all. I'm hoping she can stand up and be able to push this aside. Plus she obviously put herself in a position to succeed in her career.

I know very little about this area, and less about the attendance that supported this filth. Still, stereotyping Christians and political affiliation for this based on nothing more than associated geography is ridiculous.

If you ever talked to someone from rural PA, or visited rural PA, you’d see we were probably underselling it.

So much wrong with this blanket statement and no reason to bring politics or religion into this.

- Bible belt implies an area of people with Christian beliefs and no where in the Bible or its teachings does it promote this behaviour.
- Liberal/Democrat voters never behave badly? In the West, the vast majority of us did not vote for Trudeau so what is being implied?
- Many southern states such as Texas are red/Trump voters so why are there no instances of these situations in those areas?

Let's try to keep the focus on the idiots in the crowd who did this.
