Shesterkin is an elite goalie. The Flames will need to bear down and finish their chances to win. Go Flames!

It's interesting that teams have chosen to go with their number one in Calgary and the backup (or third string) in Edmonton the last two back to backs.

Would be easy to say they don't take Edmonton seriously, but it could be the opposite too I guess - going for the two points in Calgary and throwing away the two in Edmonton?

I think every situation is different and for different reasons so pretty much impossible to know unless you're the coach.

Maybe you think Calgary is the better team because literally any advanced metrics say they are so you wanna save your number 1 for the better team or you just want to give your number 1 an extra day of rest between games.

Last year it seemed like Flames got all the backups.

It seems to me nhl coaches have a tendency to play their starter in the game where they have the strongest chance at points and their backup in the game they are more likely to lose.

Not the only way to do it, the overall schedule could be a factor too. I’m sure there are more factors. But when using win likelihood to choose a starter, I think the above is how they often do it.

Yeah that's what I was getting at.

With the two headed monster in Edmonton maybe they feel it's better to avoid having them go off on their #1 and end up with a greater chance of getting swept.

They would have won with their starter in the net

Make them pay for giving the Oilers the backup who can't hang on to a puck

Wrong move, they could have won with a competent goalie last night

Georgev is not only bad but a headcase

You always have a chance against the Oilers because their goalies are a big joke

I think it’s pretty simple. In a defensive battle where they unlikely muster too many goals, you keep your best goalie for that game. Going to need him to stand on his head when you are likely held to few goals. Backup in for the high scoring affair, hope for the best. That’s how I’d line my tenders up.

The flames beat the rangers 5-1 a few weeks ago. Hardly a defensive battle

Well, we have punish these guys for their dreadful performance yesterday.

Absolutely shameful stuff on defence.

They deserve every bit of an encore beating.
