I just want to know how involved the Flames actually were and what they offered.
Maybe there's nothing Buffalo wanted but it really bites to have him go to a division rival.
The post above about getting out of our division in the playoffs is spot on.

Oilers have a top line better than any of the teams listed.
And yet they can't get out of the first round.
It's not only about top line talent. It's about the team as a whole.

Treliving is a terrible asset manager.
That’s the problem in one sentence. Tossing 3rd and 4th round draft picks for rentals is just insane. We have done nothing with the rentals! Trades made, not made, “the process”, some bad coaching choices (interviewed one candidate), hits/misses in free agency, holding onto players at the deadline that should always be moved for assets including retaining UFA salaries to get a better return, and the biggest of all, and the thing most directly under his control, salaries and contracts.
We are on the cusp of losing star players for nothing. Players should have been signed by july1 or traded for a ransom at the draft in June if they didn’t want to sign. This is simple stuff. Too expensive to sign due to previous contracts? Guess who signed those contracts.
I get why this thread is so active again, but this is body of work stuff and not one trade.

Eichel isn't as cut and dry because of his neck issue, surgery, and the fact that it's pretty clear the Flames didn't have a single prospect in their system that the Sabres liked better than Krebs.
|
I am not sure what you are saying. Treliving saw a need and tried to acquire a bunch of different players, none of which panned out.
So is the need gone now? That is one interpretation and the team is playing great right now.
I still don't believe this core group of players is good enough and I'd say the need to add a premium forward is exactly the same. If one of those guys were the answer, why were we chasing them?

I think people are focusing in on the wrong mistake made by Trelieiving. I firmly believe Tkachuk was on the table, and any comments to the contrary are damage control.
The reason Tkachuk isn't valuable is because of the stupid 3 year contract he is under which has a $9mil qualifying offer. If he was signed to a better second contract with term the Flames could get something for him.
That terrible contract is what should get Treleiving fired.

Uh....
The VGK also have Pieterangelo, Theodore and Martinez on the back end.
A second line of Marchessault-Karlsson-Smith
and Lehner in net.
Your point is falling flat on its face and you're struggling to stay afloat.

Ignoring the disappointment as a Flames fan, I'm personally looking forward to seeing Eichel and McDavid go head to head. That's going to be some good hockey.

Agreed.
Pains me that they're both in our division while we flail about, but from the pure hockey side of things Vegas Vs. Edmonton is going to be awesome.

I am curious what the Flames' best offer was. I think if I was Buffalo, I would have taken the rumoured Tkachuk deal, so I believe Friedman had it right in saying that it was refuted. I wonder what it ended up being.
Silver lining in all of this is that the Flames increased the cost for Vegas. There is also a significant risk there with Eichel's injury, and I guess we will have to see how strong he comes back as.
I can't say that I am not disappointed that the Flames didn't get him, however. I definitely am.

Is Vladar a rental? he seems like a great find for a 3rd round pick. Zadorov and Pitlick might not have been worth the picks(yet), but we get to try how they fit, and convince them to stay if its a good fit.
Zadorov even though he's been terrible this year showed a lot of promise in his previous seasons... I was personally hoping he could take a step in his game. The gamble didn't pay off so you move on. Pitlick seems like a good fit on a line with Backlund, and I wouldn't be surprised if he signs a reasonable extension, in this case that is more than worth a 4th round pick.
As for being on the cusp of losing players for nothing. You realize that those players could only sign with the team from the end of July. That's only a bit over 3 months, and these deals take time. In addition, I'm pretty sure the management wanted to evaluate which players perform the best under Daryl. Most likely the Flames will keep 2 of Tkachuk, Gaudreau, and Mangiapane. One of them will be traded for assets.

I don't like that contract either, but that was the only way you were going to get him signed when the blueprint was cast for 2nd contracts.
That summer Provorov, McAvoy, Konecny, Boeser and Point all signed deals with spiking last year's on their contracts.

Plus they didn't take much money back, so that was probably the sticking point for the Flames side.
If Buffalo wouldn't take dollars back and they couldn't find a home for dollars elsewhere they were screwed.

Here’s a thought, maybe it was a stupid decision from the beginning to needlessly blow $6 million on Zadorov and Gudbranson.

I keep hearing Tkachuk has a QO of 9m but there was a poster here that shared info stating that just because the last year is 9m they have to qualify him at 9m . I'm curious if anyone knows what the real QO amount would be ? I think it was 7.75-8.25 m.

I am glad we didn't sell the farm for a guy who is having a surgery that no pro athlete has ever had. Sure, Eichel could be the new Tommy John, but I don't think the risk is worth what would have had to have been traded away.
I'm legit pumped with how this team has played. Outside of maybe the Penguins game (which they won 4-0) they have been the better team in every game thus far. That does not seem like a hot streak, that seems like the guys buying in and the system working.
