My theory is that Eichel is coming to Calgary and Vegas is the 3rd team for salary purposes. Media is simply hearing that Calgary and Vegas are in on Eichel without all the information. The reason it is taking so long, is because of all the players involved (the salary retention, and conditions on the picks if Eichel doesn't recover from surgery).

Here are my thoughts overall.
Vegas is the preferred team for the player. I notice that Pat Brisson’s son is a Vegas prospect so if they gut their prospect pool to get him he has a clearer path to the NHL. Also if he goes in the deal he is playing for a team that is all about the future and giving prospects a chance. Vegas would clearly be Jack’s preference as he would get to play in a great market with great weather and taxes and for a great team.
Vegas has shown no fear when it comes to making these deals so I am not surprised they have got the closest.
For Calgary I think Eichel has been plan A all summer long. They have stayed close to it and tried “really hard” to close the deal before the season started. They have never left the table and remain interested. I don’t think Buffalo has preferred the Flames pieces but still interested enough to keep negotiations going. Treliving is not willing to part with a key piece to close the deal and likely feels like he has the right offer and the table and waiting for Adams to blink.
The way it is portrayed by most of the media is this is Vegas 1 and Calgary lurking behind. Weekes and Kaplin are members of the big US media outlet and they seem to be mentioning the Flames more than any Canadian media member. At least that is how it seems to me

Remember we were told last week that the Dolphins and Texans were finalizing a trade for Deshaun Watson and the trade deadline came and went yesterday and the Texans are going to hold on to him until the offseason. I imagine the Sabres are nearing that timeline.

Is it bad that if this happens, part of me wants either Whynot or Beck involved in this trade, so it can be added to the Neal/Lucic trade tree.

Right, and the lack of specifics or information coming out of Calgary or Buffalo might not mean anything at all. It could all stem from a shortage of sources with the Flames.

Why would Buffalo even care about this? They have no obligation at all to accommodate Eichel. I think their focus is solely fixed on making the best deal they can, whether it makes Eichel happy or sad.

Yes, but they probably feel the ramifications in the future. The way they have handled this, maybe impacts players wanting to either re-sign, or sign as free agents.
