Pelletier means fur trader.
But not a real fur trader, that's cruel.

You have to pay to acquire elite, there is no way around that. If you can do it while keeping your top players intact, why wouldn't you take that chance? The point of playing is to win. If you're playing it safe, and satisfied with 1-2 round runs, what are you even doing here?
|
I don't think anyone is struggling to understand any of this. Rather, I think some people are struggling to understand that in the absence of any actual details regarding a potential trade, the urgency and the level of freak-out among some posters here is absurd.
We don't really know what Buffalo wants. We don't know what either Treliving or Vegas is willing to offer. Without this sort of information, then it seems rather premature to be preaching about "taking chances" or "playing it safe," no?

If I had a million dollars, I would buy you an orange jersey.
But not a real orange jersey, that's cruel.

Eichel is an elite talent.
Hanifin is good, but he's not elite.
IMO the only reason you would not regret keeping Hanifin instead of trading him as a piece for Eichel is if Eichel never regained his full health and that kept him from being an elite #1C again.
I don't want to trade Hanifin in a package for Eichel, I'd rather keep him because he's an important part of our D core right now, but I don't think I'd let it stop me from acquiring an elite #1C in his prime.

Oh, I can think of other reasons for regret. For one, if Hanifin was moved, essentially decimating the Flames defence, it could realistically result in them finishing near the bottom of the NHL Standings. If the Flames won the Draft Lottery and had to surrender a pick for a franchise player to Buffalo I am certain there would be plenty of regret.

Do you regret trading Hanifin if it means playing Zadorov in your top 4, so that when Eichel is ready to come back for the playoffs, you're not even in the playoffs?

Eichel needs to not only get back to where he was...he actually needs to be better to make this proposals a good value. Career high 82 points.
there is certainly a major risk
I would trade picks and prospects but not Hanifin plus those things...If Vegas is willing to go there they will probably get a deal done. Time will tell though if it was a good idea.
This place was pretty adamant the Flames missed out on Karlsson, turns out they dodged a bullet (I get its not exactly the same)

The Flames missing the playoffs could happen anyways, for any number of reasons.
But now you at least have Eichel for the next 4 seasons.

That's why I started with IMO, because your scenario seems very unlikely.
Plus if you're going to include Hanifin, then you should be lottery protecting the 2022 1st rounder.

after a few years on this site, I'm pretty sure the reasonable price for Eichel will be whatever some other team pays, no matter how high, and Calgary could easily have beaten it. I'm also sure that the price Calgary pays if they get him will be way too much.

Meh Hanifin isn't elite he's solid but don't think he's getting to elite. If that is the ask i don't think it holds you back depending on what the rest of package is. You can trade for 2-4 defenders you can't trade for elite centres. They are unicorns of the trade market.

Has there been any credible leak what so ever on what the Flames have on the table yet ? Or is this one of those things Tre doesn't tell Conroy? Just curious what they have on the table so far.
