Game Story

The Lightning unfortunately were unable to keep up the good play of late and fell to the Sharks 4-3. It was a close game with the Sharks scoring a late goal to seal the victory. The game saw some very rough and questionable play form the Sharks as both Tomas Kloucek and Martin Straka were injured in careless plays by the dirty Shark team.

GM Moon:

“Marty and Tomas will be missed but hopefully they can recover soon. I don’t mind playing a rough, hard-nosed game but some of those guys out there were flat out reckless.”

The line of Pyatt, Brown and Scott Young continued clicking as Pyatt scored twice with Young picking up two assists and Brown added one. This line has been successful since the arrival of Brown and Pyatt and has been a bright spot on what has been an otherwise dismal offensive season for the Lightning.

The Lightning will try and rebound when they travel to Chicago to play the Hawks. Hopefully, Straka and Kloucek will be back in the line-up by then.

Oiler Powerplay executes Caps in 4-2 win

Well if teams haven't received the message yet, this just in...the Oiler's powerplay is deadly. Once again the Oilers used their proficiency with the man advantage to defeat the Washington Capitals 4-2 in a very entertaining hockey game at Rexall Place. The game featured two of the leagues most balanced squads and the two teams delivered everything that was advertised.

The Oilers got off to a quick start when Matthias Ohlund was able to blast a shot past a screened Olaf Kolzig 6 and a half minutes into the game. The Oilers had mounted a flurry of chances on a 5 minute powerplay after a spearing major had been assessed to Nik Antropov, but Olaf Kolzig stood tall until Ohlund was able to beat the Capitals tender. Marian Hossa extended the lead to 2 goals when he finished off a nice passing play with Nikolai Zherdev and Vincent Lecavalier on another Oiler powerplay. In all the Oilers held a 15-7 edge on the Caps in the shots on goal department.

But the second frame was a near reversal of the first as it was the Capitals getting their legs and taking it to the Oilers. In a fast paced period that saw 20 minutes of even strength play the Capitals were able to nod the game at 2 as Hal Gil and Mike Johnson scored just over 3 minutes apart in the middle of the period. Oiler goaltender Thomas Vokun was solid in turning away the other 11 Cap shots of the period as the Capitals were firing like a well Oiled machine.

The Oilers took the lead for good 2:58 into the third period when Marian Hossa was able to deflect a Tom Poti point shot past Olaf Kolzig. The Capitals had several good chances to tie the game up, but got caught pressing too hard when Dan Boyle left Thomas Kaberle all alone to defend a 3 on 1. Radek Dvorak slid the puck cross ice to Kristian Huselius who spotted the trailer Dan Hamhuis to one time a blast past Kolzig. The goal was Hamhuis' second as an Oiler and gives the coolest guy in the CPHL 4 points in 6 games with his new team. The Oilers than managed to get their defensive game in order and run the clock down to 00's without any further goals being scored in the game.

After the game Oiler GM Sylvanfan was pleased with his team. "The Capitals are a solid squad that is very balanced. They've been struggling to find their way lately and it's only a matter of time until they do. I was really pleased with how Thomas stepped up to the plate today and helped us win the game. The team is playing a very good system these days and is reaping the rewards. We're going to face some very good teams here in the next while, and we need to be at our best if we're going to meet that challenge. We're at a spot where we've wanted to be all season, and now the primary objective is to maintain our standing by doing the same things that have helped get us here during the past month." When asked if he had any more deals on the go the tyrant GM spouted "Well we try to talk to people everyday. Every team in this league has players I'd like, but right now I'm liking my team quite a bit. We can't get caught up and feel the need to do something that could hurt us down the road. We're doing well now, but we should do even better in the future."

How about some qestionable goaltending on your part. 17 shots 4 goals.

Perhaps the poor goaltending had to do with the fact that the Lightning were down two key members of their team and had to make up for that!!

At least league goon Tomas Kloucek makes clean hits and doesn't go out to hurt players!!!

I hope that if the Sharks play the Lightnig again that the "stars" on the Sharks make sure they keep their heads up!! (not a threat just a friendly reminder)
