Sucks to see a guy go down with injury, but crazy to think they still have Stone and Zadarov sitting waiting.
Plus IMO Mackey in the AHL who IMO is pretty much an NHL Dman at this point, just waiting for an opporunity.

I feel like the Flames have the depth to easily weather an injury or 2 to the bottom 3 D but Hanifin, Andersson, Tanev would be injuries we have a hard time dealing with. Hope it is just day to day and he is back for the weekend

Steinberg was speculating that he thinks Zadorov is dealing with some sort of injury.
It could be as simple as you suggest, but teams don’t often commit to a large salary to a player only to have him sit. This on the surface looked like the perfect opportunity to give him another shot.
