Is it a big deal if a team loses? Definitely not. There are many more important things than hockey.
For me hockey is a tool, if the Flames win it brings me positivity, and entertainment. If they lose, well it's not like I lost, so why get upset/make a big deal about it?
It remains the entertainment business, so if it stops bringing you entertainment, find something that will.

Calgary and Penguins have had...lets call it a tumultuous history....

I don't hold a lot of respect for this league and how it goes about its business, but I like this team. At least there are good people working for our club, and consummate professionals. It is nice to be able to say that. If it weren't for the Flames, I'd have nothing to do with the NHL.

At least the Flames are a team that handle situations similar to this well...of all the negative things said about the Flames organization JQ would have been gone and not behind the bench last night.
What a terrible look

Those numbers are not terrible, but they are not worth his current cap-hit of $6.375M. I saw some encouraging signs in his game, but he's on the 3rd-4th line for now. We all hope that he recovers/comes back to career averages, but right now I think his value is completely shot.
Is it a 5th round pick? probably not... I have no idea, but neither do you.

Those 5 on 5 totals will go up if they play they have the way to start the season.
The Gaudreau-Monahan pairing could not sustain any o-zone time let alone produce at even strength for the last 1-2 seasons. This new top line is doing much, much better in that department.
Those numbers should derail a lot of the Backlund hate though. He is very important to this team.

I wonder if the Flames are going to try and get a contract mid-season, or wait until the off-season so they have a larger sample size of Mangiapane.

I visited the Calgary Zoo yesterday and spent a bit of time in the penguin enclosure, I can confirm that they just tend to stand around and occasionally pick up rocks. So your assessment seems accurate.

Yeah, I'm not saying that Monahan is bad, I was just saying that his value for other GMs can be anything right now.
He has plenty of legitimate reasons as to why those numbers have been low, and hopefully his numbers go up, both 5 on 5 and on the PP. Moreover, I think his numbers get better if he gets to play with Dube and Mangiapane again instead of Ritchie.

Also Mangi signed a 2 year deal for $2.4 but you don't think he would have added 6 more years to make $35 million more guaranteed? That is a silly argument.
Flames likely sign him this off season for that deal.
|
If you can't even quote yourself properly why should I bother with this? You said 25.
And yes, these days you can compare RFAs with UFAs because (a) it's a hypothetical if he was a UFA and (b) RFAs are being paid that way now. Anyway, Trouba was an RFA when he signed his contract and so was Subban.
Players are not opting for 8 year deals like they used to. Mangiapani signed a $2.4 deal for 2 years because he believed he could have a much higher payday afterwards and he was right. For all I know he turned down a longer term.
Jfresh calling him a 2D doesn't make him one. When he was paired with Tanev they got all the tough assignments.

When was the last time the Flames went 5-0 on a road trip? I think there might have been one around 2007-2009 I vaguely remember?
Either way, I'm excited for this game! No Crosby or Malkin, and the chance to be top of the division by nights end!

I'd really like to see:
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Dube - Monahan
Pitlick - Backlund - Coleman
Lucic - Richardson - Lewis

I really like the look of those forward lines. I think we'll see this at some point soon.

I know Dube has struggled at times as a centre so far this season, but he has also shown some real promise. He's really able to use his speed and agility while carrying the puck as a centre.

I originally liked the second line (whether Dube or Monahan was C) but now I wonder if Mangi and Dube just play a pace that doesn't match Monahan, who seems to like a more controlled pace. He's very involved in the play with his present linemates because they seem to be up the ice at the same time. But obviously his linemates have little offence to offer.
That said, I think their fancy stats were good the one or two games they were together. And it's not like he's going to contribute less than Ritchie (though I didn't mind Ritchie last game). Ritchie is a guy I don't mind injecting for enthusiasm from time to time but he can't be a top 6 regular.

Yeah. I wanted Brad to lock this guy up both times he had the chance. Arguably maybe that partly motivated him to perform the way he has... but this kid has done it at every level and repeatedly proved any naysayers wrong. He started to do it a couple of years back with Calgary, you could just see it was coming.
Regardless it's one of those "good problems to have" I guess. Maybe we save some money on Chucky underperforming?
