Should we be pitching a huge package for Matthews instead of Eichel?
Mangiapane+Monahan+Valimaki+ next 2 1sts ...

Not super relevant to this thread but I could see the Coyotes making a huge pitch for Matthews at the draft, especially if they end up with the 1st or 2nd overall pick. I don’t think Matthews loves the Canadian market and would be happy to play in a much less visible locale.

You'd be looking at, I dunno....roughly $20-25 million AAV combined for three left shooting top 6 wingers if they somehow managed to extend them all?
|
Personally i'd keep Gaudreau and Mangiapane...Tkachuk probably costs the most and probably fetches the best return in a trade.

Would be a good way to replenish some of the futures you'd lose in an Eichel acquisition.

They’ll wait until he hits free agency and they’re ready to compete. It is his home.

That is the market for a #1 franchise C though. If Mangi scores 30+ this year he is going to be looking for $7M a year in his next deal. An extra 4.5 for a young C who is one of the best goal scorers in the league? You do that all day. Toronto would never trade him though unless he hits his contract year and says he is leaving.

They won't even be there by the time AM hits free agency.

Exactly. Plus they are already on a good pace to have the best odds at Shane Wright this year. Matthews + Wright in two years would be one hell of a 1-2 punch down the middle for the coyotes.

Man I dunno how Vegas beats Calgary to Eichel... Pacioretty is supposed to be out 6 weeks, from last week. Stone isn't even on LTIR and supposedly doesn't need surgery. So despite the cap gymnastics talk even with Tuch actually out they basically need to move 10 mil back which I'm assuming would be a couple of their higher paid mid level forwards like Karlsson, Reilly, Dadonov, Marchessault, all of who are too old to be contributing at peak level when their team is competitive. I don't know how Buffalo would prefer any of them to a Dube/Monahan type combo.
So then your left with Krebs, one single prospect who was a 17 overall and looks overmatched at NHL level right now, and seems super overhyped to me, and a huge cliff down to their #2 prospect, Korczak who I liked a lot here in Kelowna but looks like a defensive dman at best and a bunch of B forward prospects like Brisson and Morozov.
Plus 8/10 experts would probably say their picks will be worse than ours.
Calgary has multiple young NHL established NHL forwards, a couple prospects drafted in similar slot to Krebs who have done nothing to diminish their stock and higher picks.
I don't understand how Vegas beats calgary to the player unless they simply don't want to pay the price. Which makes no sense when they've been trotting out the same group for a couple of years and losing.
Nevermind the fact that if Calgary ends up in a division with Eichel and McDavid, the next 5 years are basically a write off.

Reports are erroneous. It turns out the Flames are in on Reichel.

One way I see this from an optics perspective makes me look back at the Bennett trade.
Flames didn’t want to trade Bennett but they basically had to. Public trade request and likely expansion issue has him as a guy they had to move out. What some people thought could happen came true and Bennett has exploded on a new team.
Now imagine the Flames traded Bennett to the Leafs or Habs like it was rumored? We would never stop hearing about him or how we screwed it up and how he is a savior for the new team. Imagine he was on the Leafs having the same impact?
When I look at Buffalo I see Vegas as a comparable to Toronto/Montreal in this scenario. Vegas has had an unreal start to their franchise and while not the biggest market they attract a lot of attention due to how good they have been and how great the atmosphere has been in the building. Sending him to a market like this will keep him in the mind of Sabres fans.
I see Calgary like Florida in this situation. Bennett is killing it in Florida and we all know but he is still in Florida. Great team but that market is fairly irrelevant to Calgary until we ply them 2 times a year or we see a deep playoff run. Sending Eichel to Calgary not only sends him across the country but sends him out of the country. Sabres fans will keep tabs but it will take a lot for the Flames to be the biggest story in US hockey.

If you acquire Eichel, seems to me you are absolutely saying goodbye to one of those three and that's even if Monhan is dealt away.
Seems like if you do acquire Eichel (and don't give up any of these three), you really need to choose between Gaudreau and Tkachuk by this deadline.

We broke Reichel into the league, we deserve to break Eichel out of Buffalo!

Unless Tkachuk is looking to sign the same deal as his brother then I don’t see how it makes sense to keep him over Johnny. Johnny walks for nothing or a minimal pick but a RFA Tkachuk likely brings back a 1st+.
For instance if the Flames land Eichel they move Tkachuk to the Blues at the draft for their 1st+Kyrou.

I did my part. I sent a text last night to one of the LVK minority share holders I have a loose connection with, saying to let us have Eichel since the Flames haven't had a #1C since Nieuwendyk.
He messaged back with a, "we're in trouble now"...
