I'm shocked at reading montreal fans reaction to this trade. Seems like an awful one to me but Canadien fans are acting like they rather have Dvorak instead of Kotkaniemi. No rational fan would want Dvorak instead of Kotkaniemi. If I'm Montreal I keep the picks and force carolina to pay with a couple great picks. This trade made it better for Carolina.

Not sure how this changes anything for Carolina. They still lose the same picks.

How could they do that? Compensation of a 1st and a 3rd was determined by the offer sheet. Montreal could either take those picks and let KK walk, or match and have to keep him for a year.

Now they potentially lose a better 1st rounder, a better later pick, for a guy with lower ceiling.
At best it’s a toss up.

The trade is irrelevant to Carolina.
And many GM’s would prefer Dvorak over KK.

Where would he slot in on the Flames?
Dvorak 25 years old 35 goals over the last 2 years 4 x 4.45
Monahan 26 years old 32 goals - 2 x 6.325
Backlund 31 years old 25 goals - 3 x 5.35
There would be plenty of excitement if the Flames were to make the same trade and go into the season with
Gaudreau-Dvorak-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Coleman
as the top-6

So putting aside how either KK or Dvorak play this season, and focusing only on the picks… what would be the worst case scenario for the Habs? If the Montreal draft pick ended up 11th while the Carolina pick ended up being 32nd? That would mean Arizona gets the 11th overall pick and Montreal gets the 32nd overall pick.
I guess even worse could be if both Carolina and Montreal’s picks end up being top ten picks. Even though Montreal would get to keep the higher of the two picks, they would still end up giving up a top ten pick for Dvorak instead of potentially picking twice in the top ten of what most say is a deep draft with lots of high-end skill.

The most likely scenario is Montreal’s is 12-20 and Carolina’s is bottom 20s

They're just trying to make themselves feel better about it by forcing themselves to buy into that narrative, and overall trying to side step the fact that they got overall a fair bit worse this offseason after what was purely a cinderella run by a largely mediocre team buoyed by an elite goalie.

Montreal had to do something to fill in the black hole at centre, but I wouldn’t pay that price if I were the Flames. I suppose if he blows up, good for Montreal, but I don’t see this amazing upgrade on line mates, assuming Dvorak basically swaps in for KK.

This is such a tired take. They don't "get" to play a game for a living. They earned it.

There is nothing "bold" about this. Coyotes management can do practically anything they want to, and no one will notice or care. They certainly have nothing to lose, which is why decisions like this one are on the contrary easy and quite natural.

Not sure I would. It doesn't address a need here, but value wise it's fine
