I'm on the fence overall. Obviously if the Habs match you're no better or worse off, but if they don't, this is a gamble on a) fit for Kotkaniemi (they bet he takes a step forward and looks like a good middle six C) and b) the first rounder (they bet they make the playoffs and do well enough that it's not top 15). Not sure I love those bets. From Montreal's perspective, unless they get a miraculously good outcome with the 1st rounder, either decision is a bad outcome. But they just went to the SCF, so they have a bit of a honeymoon period here if they let him walk and fall out of the playoffs this season (not that I think Kotkaniemi is what's keeping them in the playoffs - just that Bergevin & co. have some breathing room for a poor season / moves that would ordinarily piss off the fans).

Bennett as a 21-year old after his D+3 season where he missed most of his first season with an injury
159 games 31 goals 63 pts .4 ppg playoffs 15 games 5 goal 6 pts .4 ppg
Best Year D+2
Kotkaniemi
171 games 22 goals 63 pts .37 ppg playoffs 29 games 9 goals 12 pts .41 ppg
Best year D+1
Bennett's D+4 year contract 1.95 X 2

I think fans overvalue draft picks. Yes, Carolina is massively overpaying for a year, but then they sign him to a long term deal for a reasonable value (sounds like those discussions have already been had), and they just acquired a good young C for a (likely) late 1st and a 3rd.
From Montreal's perspective, it is a lose either way. They are screwed if they match, and they have a huge hole at C if they don't. Hab fans won't be keen to returning to being a non-playoff team so quickly. In the end though, I think they should take the picks and try to use them for another C.
My first thought was throw the 2 picks onto the current offer that he has for Eichel. Whatever he was prepared to offer before, plus the 2 CAR picks.
Can Treliving offer Monahan for the two CAR picks, plus whatever add might be required? Then add those 2 picks to the current outstanding offer for Eichel.
Coronato, 2 1sts and a 3rd in 2022, and a 2nd in 2023 for Eichel
Net cost for the Flames: Monahan + Coronato + 2022 1st + 2023 2nd

Why is that a mistake? Signing bonus makes no difference, other than the money is received now instead of over the course of the season. You understand that signing bonuses are included in the contract amount, right? They aren't in addition to.
$6.1M salary and no bonus is the same as $3.1M salary plus $3M bonus (other than timing)
The $20 was poetic salt for Montreal to swallow, but had no impact on JK whatsoever.

But partly because the payer just isn't that good. And that's the issue - this isn't a guy I would be throwing that kind of coin at. Even if there is another long-term in the back pocket, there is just little about Kotkaniemi that has impressed me.
|
I think he is still young enough at 21 that Carolina thinks they will be to salvage and help his development. This one will be interesting to what play out and compare the picks and/or player to Kotkaniemi's development.

Note: yes, I understand that there are other complications regarding bonuses, for instance that they are paid even in a strike season, etc
However, in this case, on a one-year deal starting right now, it has no material impact.

Only if the offer included an $88 signing bonus.

That is interesting. Swoop in and offer them Monahan for the speculated Dvorak package. 1st + 3rd is probably a fair return for Monahan at this point, too.
Sign me up.

Won't be very brilliant nor help them win if they pay a 29 point player over 6M

They have a week from when he signed the offer to make their decision.

Context matters, and has the appearance of an over advancement by the organization, skipping required development time for the player and putting him in situations he wasn’t ready.

If the Habs match I am sure he will survive. He has 6.1 million dollars to comfort him and if the Habs do not offer him a deal he likes he can walk at the end of the year..

Sure but he could have told them to take the $20 out...fans, team mates, and management won't think it's very funny. Hockey is a small community you don't really want to burn any bridges.
They kinda used him to play games here, surprised the agent went along with it.
