Are you guys insane? Of course we need him on our pillowy soft team.

In fact we probably need another Zadorov.

Now sign Dube and Valimaki
Then trade Tkachuk for a solid package from STL
Then trade Monahan plus for Eichel

Would've preferred some term.

Tells me it was a steep cost to retain him past next summer.

I'm glad he's signed, wish it was a little longer, but I'm excited to have him on the team. Like others have said, he's exactly what this team needs on the back-end. Big and tough.

If we're trading Tkachuk for extra stuff from STL first, we should just keep Monahan and use him as a top 6 winger while flipping some of the extra stuff for Eichel.

If you bring in Eichel, you want to keep Tkachuk, unless St Loo is offering a king's ransom.

If the relationship b/t chucky and the Flames isn't great perhaps a big year with a tougher roster and some success can help mend things.

I think it's just more the case that it is still uncertain what he is long term. The tools are there but it is still somewhat of a work in progress. Hard to agree on a long term price in that regard. Easier to have a feel-out season and go from there.

So, you think Calgary purposely kept it to one year as they don't intend to sign him after the year?

A line of Gaudreau Eichel Tkachuk would be top 5 in the league. Just deadly.

Then sell/trade Tkachuk after he puts up a career year with those two.

Again, I’m not saying any of the free agents might necessarily have been better than Zadorov, but the actual list of UFAs available wasn’t close to as bare bones as the one you posted.

David Savard, Alex Edler, Derek Forbort, Mike Reilly, Cody Ceci, Ian Cole were all available and signed to a cap hit not significantly different than Zadorov’s. Good chance some of them had no interest coming to Calgary though.

I don’t believe the flames only wanted to sign him to a one year contract, when they traded for him. Be it lack of due diligence, pressure of arbitration or conversations not making headway, walking him to UFA status is no where close to ideal.
If these are my choices, I'll take Zadorov every time. I don't think any team was afraid of being hit or pushed around by last years Flames defensemen. I look forward to players actually getting knocked off their feet or at least knocked off the puck.
I am hoping that Zadorov's highlight reel becomes a regular thing here.

Plus, it's Toronto's 3rd rounder in next year's draft, so it will likely be in the bottom third of the round -- somewhere around the mid-80s to low-90s overall.

Rittich played some terrible meaningless games and was the 3rd stringer in the playoffs. Not the best use of a pick for TO

Probably too much if he turns out to be a bottom pair

But they need a body and Treliving probably couldn’t get a good deal long term

Most encouraging part of this deal is the cap hit - I always had him at $4-4.5m when doing mock lineups, I assumed the Flames would've added more term. Still doesn't close the door on an Eichel deal, or another big upgrade as long as one of Monahan or Tkachuk is moved out.

There was no way he was ever getting signed for over 4M.

It really makes me wonder if they are planning on bringing back Gio next year.On the other hand, perhaps they are betting on one of Valimaki/Mackey taking a step and becoming a top 4 fixture. Overall, that is a very flexible move. It give the Flames a lot of options. It also gives Nikita the option of finding the best fit for him with his UFA contract. On my end, I hope it will set the stage for seeing more Russian players on the team.

One year contracts are rarely ever bad. You need to ice a team. I can't imagine the 400k "overpay" is going to prevent this team from anything.

Long term would have cost over 4 for sure... Harmonic cost 3M

I think some of you underestimate this player, reminds me of the Tanev talk last year.
