This is a great deal for the Jets, going to look like a steal in a couple years.

It is a one year deal, so I don't think you will need a couple of years to assess.
Anyone know if it takes him to UFA though? That might factor into how to look at the contract.

It takes him directly to UFA.

Thanks. I don't see that as a very good deal then. Good player and the number seems OK, but I would be curious what a 3-4 year deal would have looked like.

A one-year deal, taking the player directly to UFA status, screams that they could not come to an agreement, and the player wants out.

I wonder if they would have been better off trading him in this case and letting the new team bargin with him.

This is kind of a surprise, I thought Winnipeg was already up against the cap ? Edit- looked it up, they are smack dab at 81.5 after this signing.

Or this is all they could do with the cap and they are right back at the table in a few months.

Maybe, we'll see.
One thing is for sure though, they are right up against the cap. They will have to run a 22 man roster all year (wish no space accruing), unless something changes

I was surprised to see them that high up the cap on CapFriendly. Bryan Little on LTIR helps them comply, I believe.
Side note: It also looks like Dallas needs to make a move. I didn't see any obvious LTIR (Bishop?) candidates and they are about $4mil over.

Little puts them at $82M. With 22 players.
They actually need to run with 21 players if nothing changes

Currently sitting at $87,298 (23 players)
Little's contract is... $5,292
That leaves.......... $82,006 (22 players)

After next year the Jets will have $12.6M in cap space and 13 roster players signed. With PLD becoming an RFA, and several UFAs including Stastny having to be replaced or re-signed. Wheeler is 34 and making $8,25 for 3 more seasons. That contract is going to look bad pretty quickly if he hits a wall.
I suppose they may try and move PLD and cap dump Stastny.
