I think it largely depends on the return. If a team is willing to pay something like 2 firsts plus their top prospect/young player for half a season of Gaudreau you do it. The other part of the equation would be how are the Flames winning games. If you’re winning with a good defensive heavy game, that’s something the team can do in the playoffs and be successful. Then I would be more inclined to keep him.

I’m of the opinion the we have 3 top LWs and we are likely to lose one of them at the end of the season. That’s why I think it’s vital this team figures which two they keep and who they trade.

This is team with little past playoff success and hit or miss on even making the playoffs.

So there is just no way you torpedo a potentially successful season by trading away a key player for futures. Long term gain yadda yadda, you just can't treat your customers like that. Not when the off season seems to be about competing now, at least so far.

How do you know you could have landed Tanev in the off season when you had to make the decision to move Brodie at the deadline while your team was hoping to land a playoff spot?

It's fun cause you know it's exactly what's going to happen. This is a vintage Flames situation!

‘Knowing’ that the very worst possible outcome is certain to happen is fun now?

Why don't you just cut to the chase and tell us all exactly when and how the world is going to end? I'm sure that would be as fun as anything ever gets.

You get their capspace. Which for example in Gio’s case for a highly paid 37 year old defensman is probably worth more than what you would have got in a trade.

I think it worked out well in both Gio and Brodie’s cases.

The Flames haven't spent that capspace yet this season. It remains to be seen if they can gain any assets that make losing Gio a net gain.

Didn’t they get Zadorov or Coleman?

Yes but they haven't yet spent to the cap, 11 or so mil with zadorov dube and a few near league min contracts leaves about 5m . Flames have been a cap team for sometime now, so it will be interesting to see if and how they use the rest of the cap space.
