This can't be shocking. There are virtually no teams who could inherit $10M in cap space without sending meaningful salary back, in the salary cap era.
So, I guess this is news?

Might be best to to take Zibanejad for a season. Could potentially re-sign him, assuming he doesn’t pride himself out. If not him, Couturier is also available next offseason. If we can’t get either of those two I would take a flyer on Kadri.
Perhaps we try to have an all-in season this year and then reassess where we’re at.
Eichel and Monahan to NYR
Zibanejad to CGY
Boatload of futures from NYR to Buffalo
I’m not even the biggest fan of Zibanejad, but a big-bodied RH player for a season rental would be significantly cheaper than Eichel.
A) Still go for Eichel
B) Go for the vets Buffalo acquires if NYR gets Eichel

Have to love these quick reloads for LA and the Rangers. Bottoming out and pushing in for big pieces in under 3 yrs time. Maybe the Flames could give it a try.

Tkachuk has one year left and then is an RFA with a huge qualifying offer. Next summer he just accepts the huge qualifying offer and then in the summer of 2023 he becomes a 25 year old UFA, and everybody and their dog knows where he's probably signing.
So it's very unlikely anyone other than STL will give up anything of value for just 2 years of Tkachuk, and STL doesn't really have to give up much either, they can just wait. Their only incentive is to get him 2 years sooner and then be able to offer him 8 years.

Was it confirmed anywhere that he is set going to St Louis?
Not sure the dogs are in agreement.

I’ve commented recently on this as well. With a bit of luck and a lot of good drafting and resource management, rebuilds don’t need to be a decade long process as they were in the pre cap era.
TBH the flames went with this approach in our last rebuild. The pieces just haven’t projected like they anticipated.

2 years is am eternity when considering a player who has entered his prime and also the window of a competitive team looking to get over top of the mountain again. Tkachuk has a lot of value around the league right now despite his contract.

He is a top 6 centre, and on a team that's better than the Flames.
This team made him not a top 6 centre, that's on the team (and Bennett). Not fate, not the hockey gods. You hire three bad coaches in a row, and you get what you deserve. Bennett isn't the only one to falter thanks to those decisions unfortunately, as we are almost universally looked at as a team that underachieves every year for "reasons".
I wish Darryl would have taken over after the Peters fiasco. Things would have played out much, much differently.

So if it's a multi team deal, this is why there's a hold up:
CGY
OUT: Monahan, Tkachuk, Hanifin
IN: ROR, Theodore
BUF
OUT: Eichel, Okposo
IN: Tarasenko, Pacioretty, Picks and Prospects
OTT
OUT: Tkachuk
IN: Lafreniere, Monahan, Okposo
STL
OUT: ROR, Tarasenko
IN: Tkachuk, Tkachuk
VGK
OUT: Theodore, Pacioretty
IN: Zibanejad, Hanifin
NYR
OUT: Zibanejad, Lafreniere
IN: Eichel
Mix in some picks and prospects where you see fit.

I think the entire core of the team can have the same thing said to a certain degree.
If Tkachuk, Gaudreau and Monahan put up the numbers they did in 18/19 consistently this team remains tops in the league. I was a fan who thought in that 2015 season that Monahan and Gaudreau would be putting up those numbers they did for that one season.
Bennett is the biggest miss but I feel like all of our core players have fallen short of where I personally thought they would be.

One is a legitimate top line center with 199 points in his last 195 games, including a terrible start last season where he had COVID.
The other is a guy with injury and other question marks thanks to two straight sub-par seasons, and 158 points in his last 198 games. That's quite a difference in trade value.
