That's pretty dramatic.

They're counting on him being in the mix, but as a 6/7 defenseman. There are three guys ahead of him on the left side, and 5 guys overall without factoring Kylington into the mix.

Stromgren for me. I really liked the pick ... weird draft but I wouldn't have flinched if he was taken in the first round.

I'm a big fan of Wolf but realistically he's a long shot. Of course that's been said every step of the way for him.

I voted for a goalie. I feel like I might puke.

I don't think of Mackey as a prospect any more. He will be 25 by time the 1st puck is dropped for the upcoming season. That is a player that should be entering his prime, not just trying to crack the lineup. Mackey, Philip, Kirkland, Yelesin, and Poolman all aged out IMO. Gawdin and Lerby age out this year.

That's unfair.

He just came out of college, and played his first pro season ... not a unique path for prospects.

That and the single year was an abbreviated pandemic season of chaos.

In that year he played some NHL games, went to the AHL and started to dominate, and looked good back at the NHL level to finish the season.

Not sure on his ceiling, but he's certainly not a Justin Kirkland in terms of development pace.

Vladar gets the vote for me, though I probably also would have been voting for Wolf next.

I ended up voting Wolf and hate the idea of having two goalies in the top 5. So I probably will go Wolf, Mackey, Vladar - and then on from there to the Stromgrens and Kuznetzov's of the world.

I think not having prospect development camp two years in a row would hurt a player like Poirier, maybe more than others. Also unfortunate he didn't get a chance to be in training camp last summer; a week or two in the same dressing room and practice next to Gio. He needs pro coaching and pro habits

I think if Vladar was a Flames draft pick, he would probably win this spot pretty easily. Wolf's numbers in Junior are hard to ignore, but as we have seen many times before that doesn't mean too much and his lack of size is a worry.

This a tougher one.

Mackey and Vladar both appear to be NHL ready. Don't really know about their upside. Vladar not that high in Boston's prospect rankings and they moved on from him rather easily it seems. Mackey is older so just have to wonder how much more development there.

Wolf has been great at every level and I suppose his upside is limitless. But that might be true for Vladar too.

The second round picks are just kind of unknowns to me so don't feel like voting for them.

I think I'm going
Vladar
Wolf
Mackey

We know Vladar is worth a 3rd round pick in trade. Don't think Mackey would fetch that. Wolf probably right around a 3rd too. Which I guess begs the question why not vote for one of the 2nd rounders but what do I know.

You are counting on Valimaki coming back ready to play Sutter style hockey?

Right now it sounds like him and Dube should not be counting on a free pass into the line-up.

I think coming off a missed season, and a strange pandemic year Valamaki struggling isn't something that is a huge surprise to the Flames.

Won't get me down that pessimistic rabbit hole.

And if he does falter or they think he will falter they'll beef up the left side.

Either way Mackey isn't being relied upon to do anything more than make the team and play a third pairing role.

Last year Scott Wheeler at the Athletic had Vlader 11th in Boston's rankings, and he had Wolf 5th in Calgary. Now while that isn't an apples to apples comparison but with the variance I think it says something.
1) appeal to authority
2) a year ago is a long time when talking about prospects

For me, Vladar has shown that he is NHL-ready, and an NHL-ready goalie is a valuable asset.

I have high hopes for Wolf, but the chances of him becoming an NHL goalie are still fairly remote.

Vladar it is.

I think your assessment is off the mark. Both had tough years under Sutter, not because he doesn't like them, but because he thinks they can bee a lot better than they have been so far.

I fully expect both to see their roles grow significantly this year.

Zaradov was worth a 3rd round pick Nate Schmidt as well twice.

Vanecek went for a 2nd.. His numbers are NHL numbers not AHL

It is hard to say what you can get for any particular 3rd round pick.

I think that the Flames are counting more on Zadarov

It is pretty wild - and excellent - that we have a head to head goalie fight this early in the rankings. Two goalies in the top 5 almost seems like the seventh sign of the apocalypse as far as Flame history goes.
