Posted in the Eichel speculation thread as well.

Must read for those wanting him in Calgary and why it is so difficult.

I feel like it's the same issue as that NBC one someone posted a while back. Catering to American teams by naming them and no mention of any Canadian ones. Pretty sure I recall hearing Montreal plus all the Calgary inclusion at various times elsewhere for an Eichel landing spot. Would be nice to see them include even a single one of the Canadian teams interested just for the sake of being thorough.

Why not upgrade on Michael Stone though? Demers or Vatanen would be better backups than Stone.

Are they? If you’re hiring a 7th man, I think Stone probably is a better fit. Stats wise they seem to be a wash at best. And Stone likely signs for less because he’s ensconced here.

Stone: 21 games, 2 goals 2 assists. 6’3”, 210
Demers: 41 games, 0 goals, 4 assists. 6’1” 185
Vatanen: 39 games, 2 goals, 4 assists. 5’10” 185.

Stone is the ideal #7/8 D because he's most likely going to sign for the minimum salary (or close to it) and has a good attitude - he knows that he's likely going to sit most nights but is still a pro. He's just grateful to still be in the NHL. Plus, he's shown he can play well in Sutter's system.

I doubt the other two would sign for minimum salary (or close to it) and are willing to accept sitting most nights. And if we're adding Eichel, I don't see how we can fit him and add another D with a salary over $1 mil unless we move out some of our RFAs.

I agree with this, Stone is a good fit here. He played some good hockey for us last year, is a physical tough dman, and has a cannon of a shot.

If we’re not going to sign another RHD in accordance with the majority on here, then I want Kylington to play the 3rd pairing right defenceman spot. I thought Kylington looked very solid last year, using his skating to narrow gaps and break up plays, and he does play the right side.

I don’t think Kylington will be playing much, guessing the 6D spot will be Mackey or Stone if he is signed.

Kylington is that player who made a couple mistakes, just like literally every other player on the team (how many giveaways has Gaudreau had in the neutral zone over the last couple years, 40? 50?), it’s just that if Kylington makes them he gets benched and the team punishes him for it.

They truly do not treat him fairly compared to everyone else and it’s rooted in bias, nothing else. Cue some guy with fancy stats incoming to argue the opposite. Alternatively it’ll be an appeal to authority.

Kylington can pass the puck (very sorely needed), skates well and generates offence. Defensive mistakes are what happen when you take risks to create offence sometimes and we permit it for some (Brodie, Hanifin) but not others who’s careers get derailed (Kylington).

I like Kylington more than Mackey. He’s younger. I think Kylington has more upside because of his skating. But I recognize that’s a minority opinion.
