I want the Flames to have a prime aged elite #1C for once. It's exciting and a very important part of being an elite team.
No matter what the excuse is, they never get one.
That's all I'm saying and I don't know why you are quoting me and arguing and making excuses.

See, this kind of thing provides some subtext. You are, in fact saying it’s the Flames’ fault that a 1C hasn’t been obtained. “Excuses” implies that the Flames had the opportunity but blew it. That’s not necessarily the case.

Sometimes it's the Flames fault, and sometimes it's dumb luck.
Like when their idiot GM traded Marc Savard for Ruslan Zainullan. That was the Flames fault.
The bottom line is, for whatever reason (stupidity, poor decision making, bad luck) we NEVER get to have an elite #1C and it's frustrating.

That’s fine. There’s just a difference between “reason” and “excuse” IMO.

Another thing is that if the NYR are getting Eichel, the NYR should be expected to pay a premium because Friedman has said that eastern conference teams will need to pay a premium to get Eichel. It will soothe the wounds if I look at the return for Eichel and the return is crazy high.

You make a good point.
However, as a small Canadian market team where you have NTC/NMC clause issues, high taxes, 'Canada media/fan pressure', etc, at some point I would expect the franchise to realize that the only way till fill certain crucial roles deterministically (ie. Not assuming to stumble upon another u drafted Norris winning dman as an example), is thru the draft. Not just that, but if requires swooping into high lottery pick territory to get those pieces. As such, I think any org, but particularly markets like cgy, where free agency and the trade market aren't really channels to bring in talent to extend contending windows, the org must have a regular rebuild cycle every 7-10 years.
We had our last rebuild (our only rebuild in the cap era) about 7-8 years ago. That cycle of team building has more or less capped out and ultimately went as far as it can. They can try to extend the contention period (but let's face it, Calgary is a long shot in the sweepstakes for guys likd eichel), but realistically, the org is just spinning it's wheels for this season at least.
Going back to the original point, flames have only made 1 realistic push to land the elusive top line C, which was drafting monahan/Bennett during this last rebuild. Unfortunately, it didn't work out.
They will need to go this route again, in the near future, the next rebuilding phase of a team building cycle, to try to get that top line C.
That is the primary reason I am fully on board with the eichel chase. It allows you to get that piece (25 year old, #1C, signed with term). It's such a one off scenario, flames have to consider it. I really can't think of any real package (outside of multiple 1st round picks) I'd be hesitant to include in the package.

I only see the Rangers getting Eichel if they put Lafreniere (doubtful) or Kakko+++(probable) on the table. A recent top 3 pick on his ELC is tough for many teams to match (LA and Anaheim can do it) but so far no team is willing to do that and I am not sure I see that changing.

What I don't want to see is the Rangers getting him for a bunch of futures/picks without paying with any of their young core pieces. If NYR land him without paying something we could have beat this board is going to unbearable.

Yup. I'm really hoping that tweet is just a media member being optimistic. Until I see it from a reliable insider, I'm holding onto hope that Treliving can get this done.

That tweet was a nothing burger.
I have a feeling we see Eichel here... maybe tweeted about tomorrow and formally announced Monday.

The smartest guy in the room is such an overplayed thing. Gets tossed around in meaningless ways.

Yes but what people need to remember is that just as every team has their own draft list, each team ranks NHLers and prospects differently. So just because we, as Flames fans, may feel that players a, b and c are better than what another team gave up - it doesn't matter if the acquiring team doesn't agree. There's going to variation in player evaluations from team to team that dictate which deal they go with.

Would Coburn be a decent signing as a bottom pairing D/7th D?
