It would have been amazing if they had kept the name Maple Leaf Gardens when they turned it into a grocery store. It sounds like a terrific place to buy produce.

Nothing in the RDMP suggests to me that there will be the same, let alone more parking available as there is today.

I’m not even sure why the event center having a parkade is a bad thing. I’d rather parking take up space in the footprint than have to dedicate more space to it outside the footprint where much better and more interesting uses of the area can be developed.

It looks fine and I'm sure it will be nice on the inside but I would have liked to see a more architecturally appeasing exterior on a big project like this. Maybe it's not the norm to do this on buildings like this but things like Indigenous culture, landscape, history of Calgary etc.., even small subtle features.

I'm seeing a few different things right now and I'm not sure they're all tying together for me. It still looks okay though.

I'm totally fine with all of this. I'm assuming all the big empty space inside will be taken up by sidewalk retail for a lot of it, otherwise I'm not sure what the patio tables with the umbrellas are for. If that's the case I have no objections.

It's not incredibly ugly, and it'll remain not incredibly ugly... and that's all I'm looking for.

Well no, they don’t lol. What they need is mechanical access and delivery access and things like that, which traditionally we stick in the back and out of sight, but then we end up with crappy public spaces like dark alleys and streets with no eyes on them. there are more creative solutions than that these days tho, like mixing in retail and commercial spaces so that there is activity all around a building.

In my opinion, the entire arena is the focal point and there is no reason they couldn’t have spread the love to all 4 sides.

On the west side of the building, alongside 4th Street, there will be 2 restaurant/bar spaces (on the plans, labelled as "Sports Bar" and "Bourbon Bar") as well as a large retail Team store and HOF (which I assume means Hall of Fame).

The tables will be available as patio seating for the restaurant/bars.

There will also be a Retail space and Restaurant on the north side of the building that appear to have street access as well.

A while ago, some kind soul here shared the original Saddledome blueprints.

Out of curiosity, I decided to overlay the Saddledome layout on the new arena...

Keep in mind, it's the pre-renovation Saddledome, but the reno didn't change the basic structure of the building.

The new concourses are going to be so big, they'll be able to park a whole fleet of trucks.

I dunno about produce, but definitely hot dogs, bacon, and lunch meat.

Maybe some day, but everything east of Olympic Way is a commercial dead zone. Gentrification of Victoria Park has been sluggish. Sunterra and Village Ice Cream are the only sustainable success stories so far. Let's get a couple vibrant blocks before worrying about the far side.

Besides being pretty bland, it seems clear that the "Arena District" is in tough before it gets started. That is a ton of blank frontage all around and it's going to make for dead streets. It's a shame, as this was a chance to provide a lively corridor connecting BMO, the East Village and 17th.

So, is the footprint of the building itself quite a bit bigger than the Saddledome? I am looking at this on my phone.

I’m copying this quote from outoftheice on skyrise cities because it is perfectly said.

“Just brutal. The West side is a half-assed attempt at activating the street... No articulation to create interesting definition on a wall that spans an entire block and no large scale garage door style walls to help the insides of these places spill out onto the street. At least it's glass so that's something I suppose. Also no effort to provide an interesting streetscape beyond some trees and benches.

The north side is essentially a big blank wall with two entrances. It doesn't appear to have any street facing retail or restaurants. Essentially nothing that will draw people further east along 12th Ave to discover the Rundle Ruins, the Calgary Stampede Youth Campus or the Elbow River Park. These areas already feel completely disconnected from the rest of the neighbourhood so in my mind the fact the design of the northern facade doesn't make an effort to tie these places into the neighbourhood is a mortal sin.

The east side just gives up completely and the whole building turns its back on the youth campus and the handful of old buildings that remain in that area and could serve as some pretty cool pubs. It's almost as if the building was designed by people who never bothered to do a proper site visit and could dream about what the area had the potential to become. Given COVID, I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the actual case.

On top of how the building interacts with the streets and the neighbourhood the design itself is extremely bland so I can't even excuse the lazy urban integration with an "at least the design is iconic". All I can picture for the north side mesh screen is the same bait and switch we got with the Platform Parkade.”
