My ideal scenario is trading for eichel with Monahan or mangiapane + any future the Sabres desire. Then keeping Tkachuk and having a potential all American gaudreau-eichel-tkachuk line. Getting sweaty just thinking about it again.

I've come around regarding Monahan as the centerpiece. It makes sense as a base from Buffalo's POV since he's a C (they still need someone to play 1st line C) and because they would go almost full rebuild mode with Eichel trade- Monahan would be a decent trade chip in a year. Also if he's the central piece they could demand IMO more from Calgary since he's value is pretty low right now.
Something like Monahan + Dube + 2022 1st + 2023 1st if Eichel's injury is not considered of any meaningful relevance (I have no idea haven't followed what's going on). If the injury is a concern you can probably drop the other 1st rounder.

I hope we acquire Eichel, and keep Monahan - making Backlund the player that leaves town.
I'd just sooner bank on a (soon to be) 27 year old Monahan coming back healthy under the tutelage of Darryl Sutter than on a 32 year old Mikael Backlund.
We have to remember that this is the first real NHL coach Monahan has had since his 2nd year in the league.

We have 4 top 6 wingers. We have 2 top six centers, and 1 third-line center who is being paid like a second-line center. If we trade a top-six winger for Eichel, we'll have 3 top-six wingers, 3 top-six centers and 1 third-line center who is being paid like a second-line center.

That’s about as far as I would go if I were to offer up Tkachuk. And the 1st would be conditional based on the amount of GP Eichel plays.
After that acquisition you either have to ask Lindholm to go back to RW or trade Monahan for a top end RW.

IMO no, but if we traded Tkachuk to the highest bidder first, the ensuing return + 1st would.
Personally, I'd be trading one of JG/MT and one of SM/MB based on best value vs. contract situation. The ensuing returns would involve roster player(s), which would inform the rest of the package.
I still think Andersson is the 'roster player' BUF would want over our older forwards with less term.

How forthright is the Sabres GM going to be with other GMs about which teams are in and out of the mix?
This seems made up.

Montreal would be smart to sell high on some players after stumbling into the playoffs barely ahead of the Flames and having all those players hit above their weight for 4 playoff rounds.
Guaranteed one or more of those players are audibly booed by Habs fans before Christmas.

Suzuki and Caufield are untouchable. Neither would be on the table
