I think it is all a matter of settling on the price, which takes time. I am not terribly surprised that Eichel has not been moved yet, and he very possibly will not be traded for weeks yet.
"The longer this takes" does not really inform us about anything beyond the fact that those involved have not found a deal they like enough to pull the trigger. That's all.

Based on what has been reported it sure does not seem like the ask is anywhere near that high. I suspect that the teams involved are confident that they can get Eichel for much less than that, and are simply waiting this out until Buffalo gets closer to the offers on the table.

Plus the longer this drags on, the more time during the upcoming season that eichel will miss. That would decrease his value in the eyes of the buyer but the seller probably does not look at it that way.
The sooner a team makes the trade for eichel, the sooner the surgery issue can be decided on so that he can have the procedure and begin his rehab.

Leave Monahan on team while Eichel is on LTIR and run as is, and deal is for futures, shed cap when Eichel back by sending Moneyhands to buffalo for low pic already agreed upon

Not sure if that could be done but it would be a very smart move if it could be. Especially if Eichel’s recovery was longer than initially thought. He could be the flames’ kucherov.

Just rip a page out of the TB playbook.
Trade for Eichel, immediately place him on LTIR, then spend to cap.
make playoff and eichel draws back in game 1

Thats why GMs are likely backing away if the ask is too high for a player that may carry a lot of risk. Buffalo has to eventually come down as it gets closer to training camp.

Probably wouldn’t be the best for team moral.

Isn’t the longer this goes worse for the team that acquires him. The sooner he gets acquired the sooner they can get the process started on his surgery and rehab?

I would think teams would not become more eager as it gets closer to the season. Trading for eichel and not seeing the benefits from it till February at the earliest would make for a tough pill to swallow for a team that could end up giving up multiple assets and have a depleted line up till he joins the team. However, if the trade happened now and he had the surgery within the next two weeks, he could be ready to go as early as November.

How about keep him on the LTIR and then take on the last year of a terrible contact + futures at the deadline to recoup some of the costs of acquiring Eiche?
There may be a team out there willing to throw you a 1st round pick if you take a bad (but expiring) contract to allow them to go deadline shopping.

I think it works both ways as Buffalo’s asset becomes less enticing as well. Buffalo likely wants somebody to pay now to get the player early as opposed to later. If nobody matches the price now it has to come down.

You can't just put a guy on the LTIR until it's convenient for you, Eichel will be back before the end of the season even if he still gets that surgery. 2-3 month recovery time

And if he never comes off LTIR then Treliving can just sneak out of town ahead of the mob.

I think someone posted earlier that the surgery has a relatively high chance of complications in the recovery. If something like that happens, he could be out for most if not all of the regular season. If he’s healthy by March, you could say he needs a month to get into “game shape”. He can practice with the team during that time and you won’t need to trade anyone. That’s called pulling a Kucherov.

Why can't he just get the surgury now? Is the risk buffalo would cancel his contract?

I assume the team needs to sign off on it.

Which would pretty much force ownership to do a proper rebuild; the 2nd most desirable option to acquiring Eichel for many of us.
