^Ah, so he's the new Sam Bennett then?

I think I saw earlier in the thread his penalties aren't really out of line with other defenseman. Didn't someone also say he has less PIM than Bennett last season?

He definitely ranks higher than most, certainly higher than Bennett.
But, that's also in the context of Bennett being less penalized than people think. He only took 11 minors last year, Zadorov took 13.
Zadorov seems to usually float around 25-35 minors every year.
In terms of minors taken by defensemen, over the last few years he's ranked 1st, 2nd (behind Gio), 5th, and 36th.

You can look up the list of 4th-6th dmen that were signed yesterday
As for whether they want to come to Calgary, that’s Treliving’s job not mine
I mean I am ok with Zadorov as long as he comes with a reasonable contract. 4.5M for 5 yrs is too much for me.
Sorry the Flames make me this way. It’s not like Treliving has not spent a pick then signed a guy to a contract that he had to buy out before.

2017-18 he was 7th in the NHL with 103 PIM and has since slowed down being 24th in the league 2018-19 with 75, and the last two seasons he hasn't cracked the top 25. Last year, he only had 33 in 55 games. Maybe he has smartened up and hasn't been in trouble with the 10 minute hit to the head majors.

There is no way his contract will be over 4M.
His last contract was $3,200,000 for one year.

But here is what I remember.
I start with the bad:
Zadorov loved taking low percentage shots from the point, forcing slap shots where perhaps a pass would suffice. Kind of like a Michael Stone. He obviously has a hammer for a shot, but these days you need a scalpel in most situations.
Secondly, Zadorov takes heaps of penalties. From what I remember the bulk of his PIMs were from roughings and from hits to the head. The latter was never always his fault, he is just bigger then your average player, and he loves taking the body.
The good:
He loves taking the body. Standing up forcheckers, slamming forwards into the corner and stepping up on guys taking bad passes. He loves it all. This guy hits.
As you can imagine he is a beast in the corner and in front of the net Zadorov is in the hurt business and he knows what pays his bills.
For a while the pairings were
Johnson - Barrie
Zadorov -Girrard
and I thought that worked really well. Zadorov is a strong skater for his size, but he is not going to move the puck up ice with speed. He is the prototypical stay of home D man you pair with a more mobile D man. He and Girrard paired well together, and I think that he would pair equally as well with someone like Valimaki, Kinnvall or Kyllington.
He is not an all instances player, he is a complimentary piece that will add lots of grit, and will allow smaller mobile D men not to get punished in the corners in their own zone.
TLDR/ If you can get over the penalties you can enjoy the physicality.
|
Good summary, thanks.
One important thing to remember: he played on Colorado as a 21 to 24 year old. It takes defensemen time to learn how to be a good NHLer. Taking bad penalties and low percentage shots are easy things to improve on. Learning how to defend the cycle takes most guys years.
at 26, he is just entering his prime years

Id like to think of Zaddy as a hybrid of Regher(tunnel of death) and Sarich (better keep your head up Marleau).
He's vocal....which means his trash talk along side Raz will be hilarious. Listening to these to ferrets .....mics on both of em please. I wanna hear the smack they spew.
In fact I swear if they did an uncensored version of HNIC and you had to pay $20 I drop that with no regrets .
Glad this guy is here. We need more guys on thr roster that make the opposition think twice.

"It's a presence," Lucic said. "Not only that, but he's really strong on his feet, he makes big hits, he wins battles, and does all those little things at the same time.

Lucic SHOULD be our next captain, and he'll be a better captain than Gio ever was with us.

I will assume Tre is doing is job. You're complaining about someone else's job with absolutely no experience yourself. It doesn't help me to look up anyone that was signed yesterday because I don't know that they were available to the Flames. As many have said, the players have a say in where they sign. Add to that... there's a possibility that an interview didn't do well and they wouldn't be a good fit. It's not just numbers and positions. Personalities play a part. I would guess that the Flames have scouted and researched any player they've shown interest in. You have scouted no one.
Show me a GM that hasn't had to buy out a contract. It's common. Players/people will change over the course of a contract. Some improve, some are consistent and some will drop off.

The 4-6 Dmen that were signed don't necessarily have the same skill set, are not 26 years old, and are generally on their way downhill. as for what Treliving's job is and what your's isn't - who cares?

A. Yes, Lucic is right up there, with maybe Tanev. B. Nice of you to kick a long time stalwart on his way out. Classy.

ZERO playoff series wins! Glad he is going to a team in our division.
Will Seattle even win 20 games this year? lol
But that's ok. I get overly defensive when people criticize Johnny too.. haha

"Exhibit A" here clearly demonstrates just how over-exaggerated the importance of NHL captaincies are in the grand scheme of things.

If the Flames trade for Eichel, do you promise to hate him as much as you hate Giordano? ZERO playoff appearances!

Your anti Giordano slant is one of the most interesting (saying interesting over odd to avoid it being an insult) things I see on this site consistently.
Really don't get it.
I mean I get it when Ricardo went after him, as he's always trying to find something that will doom the Flames. But I don't get that from you other than the Giordano angle.

HELL YES! If he was on the Flames for 14 years without a playoff series win he will face the wrath!
and you guys are way too defensive about Gio the player. He just plain sucked after the Norris winning season.
He is still prob the best person/human Flame Alum after Lanny. I want him back in Calgary as soon as he is done playing as the Flame's Ambassador.
