Maybe change the ugly aluminum slab. But other than that, make sure you don't cheap out on everything inside the building.

Honestly, I don't mind it at all. Looks clean, modern and not gaudy. Looking forward to it.

Yeah I don't see what the fuss is - not enough shiny glass?

Maybe the big wall could be used for projection like T Mobile's front glass:

I noticed the change of the black wall too, after the fact.
I dunno, bottom right, where the entrance is in the newer render, on the older render those little rectangles look like cars to me (not the ones in front, but the ones just behind under the lip). Could be wrong.

Yes. That's a problem. At least to me it is.

I don’t know about shiny, but clear glass allowing for light to flow in and out would be nice. And a little more of a 21st century aesthetic vs. a big box store look from the 80’s.
I thought the earlier renderings were more along those lines. It’s certainly not hideous just a little drab IMO.

Exterior has some class to it. The real renders I'd like to see are the inside. How far out does the bowl go?
I really loved the inverted bowl idea from Rosetti.
And from what we've heard, there is a play on that idea in the works.

T Mobil has a lot of Glass on the outside (well, on that one wall), but it really doesn't do anything for inside. In fact none of the glassy ones do. It's just an outside reflective surface.
I think it looks fine.

They would have had Multiple bids from various designers through the process. The ones we were being teased while CMLC was in charge were measures more interesting than this haverdash bargain bin pick that they're now headlining.

Personally, I would like to see some wood elements in the project if possible; structural members or soffits or something. It's such a gorgeous material and warms places right up, and isn't regularly used on large arena projects. With the high quality of wood right here in the western region and its growing popularity as a building material, it would be an opportunity to really embrace some sustainable material and support some local industries in the process.

I see what you are getting at. I misunderstood your comment to mean that parking was added in the new render.
Honestly, the older ones are more than a little confusing in some of their details like this one. It looks like parking, but as I stare at it I am more and more convinced that it cannot possibly be parking.

The prison bars on the left side of the building just look like a horrible reject from a 60s-80s brutalist building/mega church/movie theatre.
Why couldn't that be glass or a big screen or something more interesting.
We have the Central Library and Studio Bell in downtown Calgary merely blocks away from this Calgary Penitentiary Arena and they look like they belong in the 21st century while this looks like it was designed 50 years ago.

It appears the new (or renovated) Seattle arena may allow light inside.

You've seen one render, which isn't final, from one angle.
And you're also talking about renders from Rossetti from 2018. It's worth noting that CMLC, the City, and CESC collectively chose HOK and Dialog as the designers of the project after an RFP process.
Maybe some context would help you in how to allocate your displeasure.

The T Mobile glass lets some light in right at the entrance and the main escalator. Of course, that's only one side - the rest is plain wall.

Well that's not true. We are talking glass that allows outside light in. Of course it makes a difference.

As of today, CMLC is still running the project. With yesterday's approval of the new plan, they will begin the transition to the new CSEC-operated management company, but everything done up to this point has been done with CMLC.
Although, I think people have a misunderstanding of CMLC's role in all of this. As I understand it, they've been the project manager and their role is coordinating everything and bringing the city and CSEC together to facilitate everything, but the design decisions are driven by the stakeholders. Whether CMLC or CSEC are doing the project management, the design of the building will be whatever the city and CSEC agree upon.
As I understand it, as the parties worked together to get a design that would come in under budget, they started discussing cutting things that CSEC felt were needed but the city felt were able to be cut -- two examples I saw were a ~200 car underground parkade and an elevated patio space. Under the original agreement, if CSEC wanted those things included, they would have to pay the additional costs themselves. That's what ultimately led to the new agreement, CSEC agreed to let the city's costs be fixed and agreed to cover any cost overruns, but in order to agree to that, they wanted to be the ones in charge of the project management. That seems like a reasonable demand to me.

In this version, the roof is also flat, but in the latest render, you can clearly see that the roof slopes down behind the (cladding?) and finishes at a much lower point on the south side.
I may have my directions off, but regardless, I wouldn't judge this at all by the above early renders as it already looks significantly different.
|
Yeah, I think too many people are passing judgement on this based on what were posted as "earlier" renderings and one angle of the "back" of the building (assuming the 12th Ave & 4th St corner will be treated as the "front door" of the building).
Apparently, the finalized design is going to be signed-off by the stakeholders by tomorrow. Hopefully, that means we'll see more angles and some interior renderings in the next couple of weeks.

Glass allows light in and let’s light escape when dark outside. Think windows. Muta’s idea of incorporating wood was good too I thought.
