When they show they can dominate the AHL consistently? Who would you pick?

You have Parsons who hasn't even been able to stick in the AHL and may never amount to anything.

Then you have Wolf who has promise, but is only 20 years old and played just 3 pro games so far with less than amazing results.

Give them time. Vladar at least has shown his dominance in the AHL and was more than worth the 3rd round pick.

I will be disappointed if his goalie helmet isn't Star Wars theme

Treliving is adding to the goaltending depth chart. Expect a signing for Stockton. (As per news conference)

Well, we did promote Rittich from a free agent signing to an NHL backup.

As for the guys we've drafted, none have shown the chops to be an NHL backup. McDonald (lol), Gillies, Parsons... to early for Wolf. Broissoit eventually broke through but he was drafted in 2011 and didn't establish himself until 2018/19.

Think of it this way: Vladar was a 3rd round pick in 2015. We spent the same 3rd round pick, and got 6 years of free development to the point where he was dominant in the AHL. Works for me.

All our goalie prospects have failed. With the exception of Wolf.

Sure maybe one will pop and turn it around but as of now no one is ready.

I would love to see parsons turn it around. Wolf will need a few years in the AHL.

Vladar is ready now. He has put in the time in the AHL. Better stats than any of our prospects to date, and we need a back up goalie now.

Guy is a really good option with a lot of upside. Cheap too!

I would say it is still a bit too early for Parsons. He is retained in the organization for a reason.

I would also add that Zagidullin was tried, but he wasn't retained. There have been many goalies on the Flames that have been tried, but outside of Rittich, none that have shown themselves capable enough to be a backup.

Parsons needs to stay healthy and get some games in. Hopefully his development hasn't been impaired because of them.

Wolf is raw, with nice upside.

Chechelev might be better than we think - but I wouldn't keep a spot open for him.

Sergeev was just selected, so obviously needs time.

Flames have always given a fair shot (sometimes been too patient, IMO) with some of their former goalies. Irving and Ortio both got decent looks (and didn't amount to anything, even as backups). Gillies got a few looks, but couldn't stabilize at the AHL level. MacDonald never found any consistency.

It is funny - the last goalie prospect that I really liked was Brossoit, and I wasn't happy about giving him up. Has become a pretty good backup. I like Parsons a lot still - but he has to stay healthy.

I don't mind going with a young backup. Yes an experienced retread would maybe be more comforting if Markstrom goes down but Darryl's teams play a goaltender friendly style and I like the idea of a backup with upside over a declining veteran.

It's ironic you post this because you have Kipper as an avatar, a back up that Sutter traded a pick for.

As others have said, none of our goalie prospects are ready. Zagidulin sucks and was let go. Parsons can't even stay healthy and Wolf is just turning pro this year.

Well, the Flames actually did precisely that as recently as 2017. But for now, there is no one in the system who is ready for this kind of promotion.

The "Flames don't play any prospects!!!" narrative-brigade strikes again.

Trust me, you can't change it. I wanted my name changed from a stupid generic 'can't quickly think of something remotely interesting' name made in haste.

You are stuck with it, as I am. I wouldn't even care what he mods came up with. It would be better than my stupid name with an accidentally capitalized I.

Brad Treliving says they've been tracking this goalie for two years at least, and the plan is to play him as the backup to Markstrom.

Really like this move by BT. AHL numbers scream ready for the next step.

Cap space savings on this move keeps some powder dry for a big trade or Tkachuk and Gaudreau extensions.

Could be a real sleeper deal!

Wolf is at least 2-3 years away anyways.
