Ryan is one of those weird players that gets extremely overrated by the people that like him and at the same time gets extremely underrated by his detractors. He was a decent 4th line guy that could play on your third line if needed but he wasn’t anything to be upset about losing. I’m very meh towards him.
At this price point it’s a good deal for Edmonton but he was overpaid here for what he brought.

Never heard that before when a player signs with another team...they probably offered him league min. Anyway I was talking about the coach...I am sure the COACH would prefer the guy he won two cups with for less money

But what 4th line guy plays at a 35-38 point range. Look at the last 2 seasons prior to this one
Derek Ryan was better than a 4th line player.
He was overpaid for how he was used last year
Has to leave to save his career like Bennett did

This is probably fair...too bad the Oilers don't even play their bottom six though. He will get 5 mins of ice time

I'm really bummed that I have to hate Ryan now.
I really liked him, and would have been happy to see him go literally anywhere else.

He went to Edmonton for 1.25M...obviously teams weren't banging down the door. He got more opportunity in Calgary than he would have in lots of places.
Cleared waivers multiple times last season too

Anything that makes the bottom six of the Oilers better (low bar) is a) strange to see b) not CP-approved

Alright, let's pump the brakes a bit now.
Bennett was sulking for the last 2-3 years.

Well I don't think any team was going sign him for $3+M again. I'm not saying that he didn't earn his contract at all, but he's very much in the twilight of his career at this point......but why do you think the Flames under utilized or devalued him?

fair enough maybe, although a fairly regular occurrence last year league wide, including his new club- I suppose he would have been higher up the pecking order there and less likely to have been a casualty of that phenomenon
Winger James Neal has become the latest Oilers forward to find himself on the waiver wire as GM Ken Holland looks to maximize flexibility up front. Holland reduced the number of forwards on his active roster to 12 some time ago, with game day changes occurring directly from the taxi squad to the active roster. The waiver of Neal will add him to an extended list that already includes Jujhar Khaira, Tyler Ennis, Alex Chiasson, Devin Shore, Joakim Nygard, and Patrick Russell. All of them cleared waivers earlier in the season, even as the 30-day exemption period after a successful waiver starts to apply to some of them. As an example, Khaira, who cleared back on Jan 12, would need to be waived again at this point in the unlikely event that the Oilers felt the need to send him back to the taxi squad.

Derek Ryan is 34 years old. He’s not “saving his career”, he’s just going to another job. He had offers and this was the highest one, no doubt. I suspect it was a matter of total $ too, not AAV (in other words he wasn’t taking a 1 year $1.5 over this one).

Rewarded for point per game playoffs at C with a demotion to 4th line wing
Face it. The people who observed his deployment and said this player could be better utilized and see more success were vindicated
That’s not even in question that Bennett saved his career by leaving

If Derek Ryan signs anywhere else, is there such an uproar?

You don’t think a 1 year return to Calgary for 4th line duty would increase his chances of playing his last NHL season?
Obviously he’s on the back 9 but some smart guys like him play into their late 30s

Every ex Flame seems to be your favorite player
Derek Ryan is an decent NHLer...easily replaced. Available on waivers or UFA for around league min

We didn't care if he left, if we're honest.
Its just the fact that he went where he did.
He hasn't been a topic of discussion at all this offseason despite expiring.
Between Coleman and Pitlick we've more than offset what is lost with Ryan. You just dont like to see the average IQ of Edmonton's roster go up a couple ticks.

That sounds like Blake Coleman production right there!
