The Ducks should be all over Eichel, and are at a much more realistic stage of the franchise to push the chips to the middle to build around their future stable of Comtois, Zegras, Jones, Drysdale, McTavish, you name it.
Really hope they step up and we don’t overpay. I’d love Eichel for the ensuing excitement, but I really think it’s the wrong move for the franchise.
I think our quickest path to rebuild could be staying the course, even if we haven’t committed to labeling that a rebuild, and not dealing our only futures ahead of these franchise altering draft classes.

^^^We’re the Calgary Flames.
We’re not winning the lottery. Enjoy the 22nd overall pick.

Precisely - I’m counting on the most Flames thing ever to happen and them to finally win the lottery when the pick is traded!

If the plus is a mid level prospect, I'm sold. Fire up that fax machine!
It would be the freakest of freak years to the point of tragic hilarity if we were somehow in line for a top 3 pick after next season. That just doesn't happen here.

The more that I look at the strengths that Calgary has, the LD prospect is perhaps the strongest. The Flames weren't willing to give up Valimaki for Stone, but that was before Mackey was in the system and his cup of tea made him look NHL ready.
I'm not sure if any team in the league could top a Tkachuk/Valimaki offer. Forget the four assets pitch.
My only big UFA target is Jake McCabe and the alteration up front would be substantial, so I'd be alright with going into the season with a D-core of :
Hanafin - Tanev
McCabe - Andersson
Mackey - Kylington/Stone
If Buffalo held to the four asset model : Tkachuk/Mackey/protected 2022 first/2022 second. In my opinion Minnesota and Anaheim (the other two suitors according to Friedman) can't really touch that.

Tkachuk is worth at least two 1st round picks and Mangiapane is what you hope a 1st pick turns into. This is not what Eichel will cost and I think many Sabers fans will be disappointed in the actual return for a less than mint condition Eichel.
This is more than Buffalo is asking for and is probably closer to the value of 4 1sts, a 2nd, and another low pick. That's way too much to give up for someone who wants out and also wants an operation with a seventy-five percent chance of success and returning to work (in the successful surgeries screws were still shearing off and I imagine most who "return to work" aren't getting hit over and over as part of their job).

If the Flames offered Tkachuk and an unprotected 1st (plus whatever else), I will immediately become president of the 'Fire Treliving Right Now' club

I am a bit curious to why it's always Zary in the trade. Does he have more value than pelletier?

Maybe his names just easier to spell, probably because he’s a center.

The Calgary Flames are destined never to win the Stanley Cup with a player who has a Z in his name.
It's the curse of Zarley Zalapski.

If I were a team trading a 1st round pick away the lottery protection is a wash anyways. You’re either giving up a card in the Wright draft or a card in the Bedard draft.

I agree but IMO it will take AT LEAST something along those lines.
Gotta remember...Buffalo doesnt have to trade him this summer. May make things awkward around their room but truth is there is no pressure on Adams to do it now even if much preferable. They can wait it out.

It may take that, but we don't have to pay it.
And no Buffalo doesn't have to trade him but if they don't, it will be bedlam in Buffalo this year.

One bad year is possible as an aberation.
Two bad years is a tear it down situation, at which point, giving u the pick in the 2nd year is preferential to the first. Especially this year, where 2022 is looking to be a stacked draft.
Not lottery protecting a pick is just silly - no upside to not doing it

This is the one thing that I don't think that they can do. He wants a surgery. If the team refuses to let him take care of himself physically, it opens up a lot of legal doors I don't think the NHL has ever had to deal with before.
It might just be Buffalo doing Buffalo things, but I can't believe there has been no resolution on the injury front, and the Sabres refuse to budge.
I retract my earlier trade suggestion. I understand why other GMs are waiting this out, the price is only going to come down the longer Adams waits.
I think that Eichel will get the surgery that he wants days after a trade is complete, and the recovery could lose him the year.

I dont want anything to do with the guy until his medical status is understood and to me the fact the Sabres not allowing other teams to due that kind of investigation is the biggest red flag in a sea of them.
Doesnt mean BT wont go all in on him though, which means if he wants the guy, yes he will have to pay it.

This has been my point the whole summer about Eichel - don’t get cute trying to get Eichel at the right “value”.
What would you have paid to get Joe Thornton in November 2005? Would anything short of Iggy or Kipper himself have mattered?
There’s debate that we have the pieces for this trade.
But if you’re saying Tkachuk, Mangiapane, a 1st and a 2nd is already more than what Buffalo is asking for, give them that and get Jack Eichel.

Eichel can go get his surgery tomorrow if he likes. Its a free country after all.
Is he willing to risk 50M dollars guaranteed to do it though? I think thats all this boils down too. It would void his contract.
Its why Buffalo is so hesitant to agree. The surgery has never been performed on an NHL player before and if something goes wrong, they dont want to be on the hook for a large fortune if that happens. Hard to blame them actually.
Really doesnt matter though...some team will take the risk, and it is a risk, and may or may not look like geniuses when its all said and done.

I am not especially worried about whether a trade or an extension is in place by the 28th. If there is no news by Wednesday, then my expectation is that an extension is in the works and will get worked out at some point over the summer or during the season.

This is a bad take……Tkachuk is probably the best piece Buffalo would get from any team in the running for Eichel. “If it’s more than they are asking just give it to them”…….my goodness.
