You cant! They absolutely cannot.

First of all they'd be lambasted for letting Larsson walk. They'd be crucified.

And Smith? Look...I hate to be the guy that tells you that he's their best goaltender. But he is their best goaltender.

An intelligent manager would try and secure him for 1 year and as little as possible.

Actually an intelligent manager would move Hell and Earth to find someone else, but we're talking about Edmonton so lets shelve that.

You know what Smith is going to sign for? Whatever he tells Edmonton to sigh him for.

As a replacement for Jones, the trade is whatever. Keith was a great player, but at this point, it is dufus for dufus with Edmonton paying a 3rd for experience.

But big picture, there is some big opportunity cost as unless there are big changes coming, it makes it really hard to spend cap where they really need it. Chicago not retaining cap is pure wizardry.

I just don't understand this move.
Even if it's just to bring in some experience and leadership, I'm sure you could have found that in free agency without giving up assets, right?

Oilers under contract for 2023-2024:

McDavid
Draisaitl
RNH
Kassian (last year)
Broberg

Pretty clear where management is taking the direction of this team. Nurse will be re-signed and the rest of the team it seems will undergo a complete rebuild over the next 2 years.

They have 10 forwards, 7 D, and a goalie under contract, looking like so:

RNH - McDavid - Pulju
XXX - Draisaitl - XXX
Shore - Turris - Kassian
Archibald - McLeod - Neal

Nurse - Bear
Keith - Bouchard
Broberg - Russell
Lagesson

XXX
Koskinen

They need a starting goalie, 2 top 6 wingers, and 2 more bodies to sign.

However, that includes the fact that there are NO NHLers in the bottom 6, and the top 4 on D include Nurse, Keith, Bear and Bouchard.

They don't need a couple wingers, they need 4 or 5 top 9 forwards, 3 more top 4 D, and a #1 goalie, in order to have a playoff team.

Good luck with that.
$65.3 million is BEFORE taking this additional $4.8(?) million from this deal.

And $4.45M in cap that they really dont have to just throw around.

We joke about Smith but he had a .923 this past season...HIGHLY unlikely they improve on that no matter who the find.

McDavid IMO had the best PPG of his career...still wasn't good enough. I think the Oilers are in tough to be a playoff team. No 9-0 vs. the Sens either.

So 10 million and they need 2 top 6 forwards a goalie If Klefbom comes back take off another 4 or so I think. Yamamoto will be an easy resign with a chunky raise though he wasn't great last year he was ok.

That blueline right now is really ugly. And if Boberg makes that team its ugly.

I dont even know what you're trying to say.

This season was the definition of a statistical outlier. Of course Smith isnt going to repeat, for a multitude of obvious reasons. Neither is McDavid or Draisaitl....

Frankly, this season was only played at all because of contractual obligation. Some players/teams capitalized, others didnt. But I'm putting zero stock in anything that happened this season.

Its an outlier. An aberration.

Yes, sorry, in my haste I forgot to add Keith and subtract Jones.

Their cap space is currently about $10.6M

Yamamoto, Smith and Larsson would eat all of that.

Are saying the Oilers are aiming for the 2022 1st overall pick?

To Do list:
- re-sign Ryan Nothing Happens - check
- make defence worse - check
- re-sign aging goalie who is likely to be worse

I don't think players are lining up to play in Edmonton.

Keith makes the PP better and can eat 2nd pairing minutes behind Nurse.

It's expensive insurance against Klefbom not playing.

I love that they have such a weakness for big names, regardless of their recent body of work.

They always think they can resuscitate them. Or Connor is some walking fountain of youth.

Even Staples isn't feeling this:

@dstaples
Hard to see this as anything but a massive overpay by the Oilers, at least if you go by Keith's advanced age, 1st-pairing d-man salary & major drop in point scoring production.
That said, I haven't watched Keith closely and don't trust iffy stats analysis where he shows poorly.
