A bit sad because it seems all but certain we will see Monahan move at this point.
Kid had a great flames career, if this is the end... he remains one of my favourite roster players in spite of some recent struggles. He'll always be money to me. I think that he'll come back very motivated from this injury and be a force. We better get a good haul for him if we do move on.

Not that the Canes would trade him, especially for Monahan, but I would love to aquire Martin Necas-6’2” skilled C. Very underrated, big potential. 41pts in 53 games this year.

It's clearly going to be Monahan for Aho.
Trade is one for one.

It should be one for two. If you are turning MONAHAN into AHO, you have four letters left over and can use them to make MANN.
Is there a jersey named Mann that the Canes could throw in?

That would be a win for the Flames. I hope you’re right.

You're not getting a haul for him at this point. He's playing the worst hockey of his career and seems to always end the season injured and requiring surgeries. GMs won't pay for hope that he'll return to form, they'll use the last year and half against him to drive down the price. Even his contract isn't enticing anymore in the current cap environment.
That said Monahan will get the normal package of mid/late first rounder plus a solid prospect. Anything more than depends what kind of salary Treliving is willing to take back.

If this is the return you may as well hang on to him. This decimates our C depth if nothing of consequence is coming back. Won’t happen as long as Sutter is here. If he is moved need another top 6 coming back, not a package of magic beans.

Carolina seems unlikely to me given they have Aho, Trocheck, and Staal down the middle already. Where does Monahan fit?

Trading Monahan for an Iginla (#### that was a bad trade) level of return doesn't help this team one bit....Unfortunately thats what he's going to get right now.
#1 Lindholm
#2/3 Backlund
#3/2 Zary (cautious optimism at this point..but who else is there really?)
#4 Pucks Darryl used as horseshoes at some point and some how convinced Brad are a serviceable NHL Centre
Thats a rough Centre ice core. I wouldn't be scared of the middle part of the ice if I was ANY team that made the playoffs this year..

If the first round pick had panned out, you might view that trade differently.
Iggy ceased being a very good player at that time. Trading him was a good idea.
Trading Monny now only makes sense if Calgary knows he will never be an effective player anymore. That would imply chronic medical issues that aren’t going away. Since presumably any team trading for him would have the same medical reports, hard to imagine any team trading for him.
Calgary needs to keep Monny and see if he establishes some health, production and value. Only then can they decide if trading him will help the team. Or not.
But the current dream of trading Monny valued as a 60-65 point centre (because he is broken down due to physical imitations) is just that, a dream.

Look at Detroit. Haven’t finished higher than 24th overall since 16/17. Haven’t had a single top three pick in that time.
We also don’t need to look too far to see that landing one or two elite/generational talents is no guarantee for contention.

Apologies if my post was confusing.
First off, I am not advocating for trading Monahan in the slightest. That wont go well for the Flames at all.
Moreover, yes Iginla needed to be traded, 100%. The pick didn't turn out so thats a moot point. That was an debacle of a trade by Jay feaster no matter how you slice it, no matter the corner we were painted into by his NMC.
Second,
What I was saying was, Monahan right now wouldn't return more than Iginla got us all that time ago...A couple of B-minus level prospects and a single first rounder is about what we would get...
A player that could fill Monahans roll (as a 1A/B centre, as disheartening as that is) isn't coming back unless he's a piece in a package in a "hockey trade". Thats a hard trade to broker form either side because of the perceived value that both sides are prioritizing.

Big problem with the Iginla trade was the two prospects were from the discount bin.
Monahan for a later first and two quality prospects? Sign me up.
I'd hope we could find a serviceable centre somehow at less money. Teams aren't too scared of our lineup down the middle as is.

Oh boy I would give a lot of Necas. Monahan + for sure.
22 years old, big, right handed, productive center. Consistent improvement year-to-year, no sign of slowing. Lots of long term control.
If Carolina really wants to compete now, they could consider trading away part of their future. But I do wonder what it would take.

You would need more than Monahan to get him
Tkachuk for Necas+ is more likely

Necas is already better than Monahan. At least the Monahan in the last 2.5 yrs. and there is no sign of a turnaround

Yes, I was going to say, I think you might have to offer Tkachuk instead of Monahan. The Hurricanes have a lot of centers, and Tkachuk could help them win.
But if the Flames acquired Necas without giving up Monahan, they would have a lot of centers as well.
And Tkachuk, in 5 seasons, had never had fewer than 48 points. Necas has never had more than 41 points. So Tkachuk is much more proven. Hurricanes would have to add for sure.
Imagine having Aho, Svechnikov, Tkachuk, and Trochek in your top 6.
That while having some of the best defense in the league.

The Canes aren't trading Necas this off season. He was on pace for about 60 points in a full season and still has a year of ELC left.
Maybe next off season if they want to be cheap when it comes to extending him, but even then I highly doubt it.

If Bean makes it through expansion I could see a deal like Bean+Trochek for Monahan.

Other than Jarvis , Bean would be the prospect I would want the most out of Carolina . Doubt canes would throw in Trochek into deal.
