Unless Gio goes to treliving and says I’d like a chance at the cup there is 0 chance the flames don’t protect him or at least leave exposed and trade an asset to keep him. He’s an all time flame and they did the same thing with Iginla.
Flames should look at moving Hanifin for a forward or package hanifin in an Eichel deal. There is 0 chance the flames will crap on Gio so need to look at other options

Well, that's you, and that's totally fair.
The post I was responding to was suggesting losing Gio to Seattle then trading them a third to get a lesser d-man with a lower cap hit. I suggested just trading the third to keep Gio, and Banana Slug suggested that the value would be in the cap savings. Also a fair opinion which I think is a bad one as I believe Gio is still a very good top 4 D. Top pairing with the right partner (Tanev).
I'd prefer not to pay the 3rd to keep him, but it will cost more to replace him, so it might just be worth it.

Zero chance?
I think it’s at least 50%.

But the same token I'm just as content if he is taken by Seattle and we get the cap space. However if Sutter really wants to keep Gio in his top four then I would suggest that's the minimum they'd want is a 3rd. And I'm not tore up about that either. It would be nice if Gio stayed. It would be great if Sutter really does have faith in him. I think change is coming and it's Mr. Sutter who will or will not bless any potential trade.

Not sure I follow you on the Iginla-Giordano comparison. Was there an expansion draft in 20109-12 I missed? If anything, I hope the Flames have learned from how and when Iginla left. Gio has been a tremendous Flame, but he’s not Iggy. Short of winning a cup, he won’t be either.
I think there is a very legitimate chance he is left exposed. I also think there is a very legitimate chance the Flames surrender an asset so that Seattle doesn’t take him. It will come down to the price and I hope the Flames management and owners are able to make the shrewd move here.

My comparison Gio to iggy is flames fans criticize gms for not trading him but as long as iggy wanted to stay what gm would run him out of town? No chance it was happening even though it was clear the flames needed yo rebuild
Same is going to happen here. Unless Gio says I’m looking to move on there is 0 chance the flames will let Gio go to Seattle in expansion draft. We can keep dreaming it will happen but it won’t. 0 percent chance he is a kraken next year. 0 percent he’s traded unless he wants a trade

Sutter will play in this. If he wants Giordano, he will get him.

This is the last ship. Sutter and Treliving are tied together. 2 years. If they don't make it to atleast the west final in 2 years, they're gone.

It costs (in your example) a third plus Kylington, since Seattle still takes a player.

I would see if they can be enticed to take Lucic. Send a 3rd for that.
Solves many problems.

I know it won’t happen but it would be unbelievable to get the Kraken to select Lucic by simply paying them the 3rd the Oilers gave us in the initial deal.
Just to see the response up north would be amazing

I feel like Sutter has a longer leash than Treliving. TBH I'd have relieved Treliving in May

It's not my example. It's Banana Slug's. I'm only commenting on it.
I do see your point, though.

That was my example, and I was only spitballing from the Vegas example where a number of excess D men were traded for something around a 2nd-5th rounder.
I personally think a 3rd and Kylington is too much for one year Gio as well. 3rd and Lucic would be really good for the Flames, but not good for Seattle.

Semi-related but I was looking at the buyout option for Lucic on Capfriendly and am I wrong or does it kind of make sense to buy him out this off season? You only save $1M this season but after that its $500k for 2 seasons. Brouwer comes off the books after next season too.
Sure, its $4M of dead cap this season but you could argue its $5M of dead cap if he plays. Not to be mean but the team could get faster and upgrade elsewhere. I'm sure he brings a lot to the room but this might bot be the worst idea. Maybe close but not the worst.

Doesn’t make sense imo. Saving 1.25M this year and then having 3 more years with dead cap.
Lucic provides value to this team albeit overpaid. Buy him out next year if need be to get the Gaudreau, Mangiapane, Tkachuk contracts to work but no need this summer
