It's a pain because it is very easy to forget since the payments are still coming out of your account.

The police have scanners on most of their vehicles now and there is no grace whatsoever. $675 fine on the spot, and funnily most people have the car re-registered on their phone by the time the ticket is written.
Well that’s still stupid, why doesn’t the registration auto renew and tack on the extra money with your insurance?

Here in Nova Scotia registration is good for 2 years. They are nice enough to send out a mail reminder 2-3 months in advance, which includes how to renew online.

However,

If you renew when you get the letter, the registration is good for 2 years from the month you renew.

So,

If your plates are up in December 2021, and you get the reminder and renew in September 2021, then the registration is good until September 2023, thus giving up 3 months.

Like hell I'm doing that.

The downside is, you might forget to renew in December and get pulled over in January. Fortunately it was in January and the cop was nice enough to give me a break... errr... I mean, that's a hypothetical situation that may or may not happen here on the East coast.

You can register for 2 years here too. They stopped mailing out notices a few years ago to save money (worth it IMO).

There's no extra money involved, it is the act of doing a declaration, which is a few yes/no questions (will the vehicle be out of province for more than 30 days, commercial, etc). That's it. You can do it online in less than a minute, but if your on autopay and miss the reminder letter or forget you are technically driving an unregistered vehicle.

While there is no excuse for driving unregistered, when the system is so autonomous and you see so many people getting tickets there is a hole that needs attention.

You have to go to a registry office to get 2 years. Online is only 1 year.

Was that the root to why you were pulled over? If so, that's absolutely a time waste -- and will be quashed.

Never heard of such a thing, a cop that dislikes you will pull you over for that but will lie about the speed because any judge would throw that out for reasonable error and chastise the cop right in court.

Technically the police can pull anyone over to check the following:

1. Sobriety of driver
2. Check for insurance documents
3. Check for registration documents
4. Check for drivers licence
5. Check mechanical suitability of vehicle

Police don't need a reason beyond that, as in a traffic offence or obvious vehicle fault like missing a tail light isn't required.

Family member has a COP friend... apparantly sometimes the PoPo literally go through parking lots (such as Superstore) and look at vehicle front windows and leave a ticket under the wiper if the crack(s) are bad enough. RGMG as Friday I took a rock on the side of the window and now thanks to the heat it's spread halfway across... and the previously not so bad small crack on the opposite side has spread towards the new one. sigh... So the question is... at what point do you just get a new windshield installed?

When a cop says you need a new one with a friendly reminder.

I'd rather avoid a "reminder notice" that comes with a fine attached. sigh...
Not a good time trying to "afford" a ~$450 windshield (Glassmasters).

Its for a mid-size SUV, no bells and whistles. Was expecting half that.

Try another shop, there are multiple sources of windshields and I have shopped around and seen a considerable difference on some windshields in that price range.

My mustang was 450 just for the glass from one manufacturer (exact oem replacement) and under 200 for a jobber.

Anyone heard of Kraken AutoGlass? They're a new shop (April)... but gave a good price.

Sorry I'm in Moose Jaw. No help there.

Good name though, see them when a rock has released the Kraken?

Cal Alta auto glass replaced my windshield a couple years ago. Quite a bit cheaper than competitors. In the NE off 32nd ave.

I was told they use cheaper glass that chips easier but it has been fine for me so far.

Looks like I will go with a “jobber” plus a non OEM windshield which comes in $225-270 installed depending on which quote I go with.

The OEM windshield was over $900 to which I said to thine self “fer fahketh sakes thisish intolerably hefty dear sir, though shall not bendeth thineself upon oneself and hence taketh one upside thine canal”.
Aka: OEM FAGEDABOUTIT!!

I usually go there as well. Windshields are disposable in Calgary, tough to justify not going with cheapo glass.

I'm not sure if they still do it, but if you bring a food bank donation you get $125 off at Cal Alta. Check the website.
