This seems to be the way these things work - 1 Person throws out a new players name the Flames could acquire, and then 20 variations for the same player are proposed.
All of a sudden everyone is an expert on the player and for some reason he is exactly what the team needs!

Man it's a hot one.

Of course Patrick is a RFA, so would require a minor raise, and based on his performance, that is a very small raise if any. Could work for both teams.

I would back the truck up for Seth Jones. I know we've talked a lot about Eichel as a potentially transformative addition, but I think Jones would be right there in terms of impact.
The problem is, if you empty the truck out for Jones, you've got nothing left to address the problems at forward, which are probably more pressing for the team.

I could be misremembering but isn’t Jones awful if you’re one who believes in the advanced stats and the such? Like a Ristolainen situation?

That could very well be, I feel like at least half of the players I'm really into fit that description.

If we're going to move Monahan I think it has to be in a deal where we get some that can help out immediately, then a player for the long term. Thomas is obviously a long term player, but then you have to add in a player that balances salary and is a short term guy. Who would that be? The only big salary they have up front they would likely be inclined to move would be Perron, and he had a NTC. Making a deal with the Blues could be very difficult.
I do like the suggestion that came up earlier this week with Monahan going to Ottawa. I think they have pieces that could work for the Flames. Pinto appears to be a long term piece, so they just have to land on the shorter term player. Connor Brown keeps coming up, and I think that is a decent fit. Is the salary enough of a balance for Ottawa? If the Flames really want to make some change they could go for Colin White (3rd line center) and then move Backlund in another deal for help elsewhere. I would be happy with both as the Flames net a good young player and use their cap effectively to improve the team. I see a better fit here.

This is purely hypothetical but I've heard of rumors of the Flyers, Columbus, and Ottawa all being spots with potential interest in Monahan.
The Flyers one intrigues me because if you are shipping Monahan to Philly then you might as well send Gaudreau there too. Johnny's two best pals in hockey (Monahan and Hayes) playing on his childhood team...good luck keeping him away from there as a UFA.
Gaudreau+Monahan
for
Konecny+Gostisbehere+Patrick+2021 1st Round Pick
The way I look at it:
Gaudreau > Konecny
Monahan > Gostisbehere+Patrick
So the 1st is used as the sweetener to even it all out. Maybe it's a 2nd that only turns into a 1st if Gaudreau re-signs with the Flyers.

^ if there is are two fallers in the top 10 I’d consider it.
A Gaudreau - Monahan - Hayes line would actually be pretty dominant imo.
I think we can maximize value better if Gaudreau and Monahan are traded separately though. I also think we try to keep Gaudreau, or at least talk about a potential extension.

If Thomas would resign long term for $4 to $4.5 mil per year I would do it straight up for Monahan. We get younger, faster, and gain valuable cap space. Considering how bad Monahan was last year we probably get better right away. But the extra $2 mil in cap makes it easily worth the trade straight up

I would definitely do this trade for the Flames if they can’t make a Johnny Johnny extension work

I wouldn't touch that deal with a 10' pole if I were Calgary. Not unless there was something else in there to sweeten the pot, like a young center that looks to have some potential. Gostisbehere is a stomachable asset if the Flames can move Giordano, but otherwise he's an expensive bottom pair defenseman, which is not attractive. Patrick is not that futures player you look for. Again, what does he do that is above average? He looks like a player that peaked in junior and has not been able to adapt to the pro game at the level expected. He's so defensively deficient that he is untrustworthy out there and I can't see Sutter being happy with him around. If the Flyers dangled Foerster or Frost as an add, then I might be a little more inclined. Hell, maybe they kick in Brink as a midget-for-midget replacement sweetener?

That is a damn terrible return for a young top pairing D, Flyers hang up.

Value is fair (if not favouring the Flames), but deal doesn't really make sense for either side...though I'd do it if I were CGY and wasn't finding much other interest in those two.

Who is the young top pairing D in this scenario?
Ghost? The 28 year old who cleared waivers?

Konecny was not as good as the previous season, hurting his value for those assuming a continuous upward trajectory. Likely why he is not in Elliott's 'untouchable' category for Philly. Honestly, if we were to look at the three teams that are currently in the news for players that are likely to be moved, or at least active in trade talks, and put all of those eggs in the Calgary basket... it would look something like this IMO.
Jack Eichel for Matt Tkachuk + Jusso Valimaki
Jake Koncecny and Nolan Patrick for Johnny Gaudreau
Connor Brown and 2022 2nd (TBL) for Sean Monahan
Mangiapane - Eichel - Brown
Dube - Lindholm - Konecny
Pelletier - Patrick - Joel Armia (UFA)
Lucic - Ruzicka - Ritchie (UFA)
Giordano - Tanev
Hanifin - Andersson
Mackie - Kylington
I guess you can say that is a very different team. Although the prices are fair, I don't see a single one of them coming to fruition. Fun to think about though. That includes Backlund going to Seattle.
