You guys definitely have a neat hobby and I can kind of see the appeal and your enthusiasm shows in a way that's fun to follow along with. I'll go back to spectator mode now on this one. Thanks.

I think you can wear whatever you want and look fine - so long as the clothes fit somewhat properly. Oversized / baggy clothes dont look good on anyone, nor do i think they are more comfortable than proper fitting clothes.
But yes, as Pepsifree said, I couldnt care less about cars; but i get why people like them. Same with clothes - it's easy to see why people enjoy dressing well.
IMHO, when someone says they like my coat or my outfit or something like that, it is far better than someone liking my car. My car was purchased from one of few companies. The only barrier at that point is capital - within reason. Clothing is much more of a personal thing. If someone likes what you put together then it feels great
One of the few great feelings you can get is when a person (who isn't hitting on you) says "hey thats a great jacket, or i like that look)

Hah, don't worry...snapped out of it now. Just need to find a way to keep my ankle socks from sliding down my feet when I walk to the store in my Crocs and I'll be golden.

That's a humungous misunderstanding of car culture. Shows huge ignorance (not in the mean way; I'm clearly ignorant about fashion). It's not like the guy with the most expensive car wins. There's so much more to it.
The way you describe the compliment on your clothes is exactly how I feel when I get a compliment on a car I've worked on. I remember my old boss getting into my '91 Passat wagon in like 2002 and saying, "we're paying you too much if you can drive this." She thought it was new. Nope, 10 years old, but I just kept it looking like a million bucks and only paid $9k for it.
Spending an afternoon putting in a strut-tower brace, short-throw shifter, whatever on a car is bliss. Then driving it and feeling the improved characteristics is really fun. Or even just upgrading an old stereo into one with bluetooth, adding a sub, swapping out the speakers...giving an old car a stereo superior to most things you can buy from the manufacturer is really fun. There are a billion ways to make your car unique. Like fashion, you can go totally overboard and make it look like trash, you can keep it fairly stock looking if that's your thing, or you can take a plain and boring older car and inject new life into it with some elbow grease.
It just has nothing to do with buying your way to a cool car, although there are those guys, too.

Try as I might, I can't seem to imagine what any of you guys look like as many of the things posted in this thread just seem too out there in my imagination, especially for the amount of money they are going for.

How about a new style challenge?
Post a picture of how you are dressed for going to work/going out and have others critique it?
This is what I am wearing today at the office and similar to what I wear when going out socially as well. Dressing is pretty simple, especially for a man. For me I think my plan is to just get things that fit you. If you don't know, go dark and plain to be safe. It doesn't matter from where or how much it costs.
Blazer - $100 (Zara - was a full suit but I separated it from the dress pants as the office is casual now)
Skinny Jeans - $20 (Winners sale rack)
Plain long sleeve shirt - $7 (Walmart clearance)
Shoes - $8 (Walmart clearance)
Casio G-Shock GWM5610-1 - $150 (Amazon)

Pretty basic, but you are in good shape so fit isn't terrible. I think a suit jacket with jeans looks weird. Like a mullet - party in the back and business up top.

I like linen but I don't think that look is pulled off very well at all, it's pretty frumpy and oversized (yes, I know linen is meant to fit with some room). Not a fan of the whole look.

I don't mind the jacket and jeans look. Hard to tell anything from that picture, other than it's a hard "no" on the shoes there.

OK. Well definitely don't look into Engineered Garments, I guess.

Looking like you are going to a soup kitchen: priceless
Anyone can spend their money on anything they want, without having to justify it to anyone else. However, if you want to look like you're homeless, you can do it for substantially less than $1,462. I legitimately don't have a clue where someone would wear that outfit to. My closest guesses are a hipster coffee shop, camping, or busker at Granville Island. I would never wear that to work, a restaurant, hockey game, golf club, beach, movies, grocery store, or interview.
What age group wears this? Maybe I'm too old for this trend. Maybe I'm too young. Maybe I'm too skinny. I prefer my clothes to fit instead of looking like I'm wearing a burlap sack. I prefer pants that are tailored to the proper length. Maybe I'm too conservative, since I wear suits to the office, but if I was going out to dinner or to the movies, and I wasn't wearing a suit, I'd wear something like these, depending on the occasion.
Dinner at the golf club:
Date night at a fancy restaurant and/or show:
Casual drinks at the pub, minus the headphones and toque:

I actually quite like the first outfit, minus the pants. If you were wearing a normal pants, it would look great. I actually have a similar jacket, and I get compliments on it all the time.
The Lundqvist too tight and colourful sports coat, on the other hand, looks awful. Great for peacocking if you want to draw lots of attention to yourself.
The Gosling outfit is also too much. I don't need to see that much of his ankles. The combo of a striped sailor shirt and flood pants is overboard on the nautical theme. Unless he's at a yatch club in the 1950s there's no reason for him to be dressed like that. I'm not a member of a country club, so maybe there are rules about dressing like an ass that I'm not privy too.

@Corsi: Oof, yeah that's a hard no from me on Engineered Garments. Not my look at all.

In the last 2 or 3 years, that has become 75% of my wardrobe. Not the super wild stuff, but some of it is dope.

I have a 48” chest and 90% of my clothes are from Uniqlo because it’s the only thing I can get in Taiwan that DOES fit. You’re at most an XL in their shirts, more likely an L.

I'll try to swap to some dressier (laced) tan or brown shoes. For blue jeans I try to pair with dark navy jackets. I wouldn't wear grey or brown jackets with a pattern with blue jeans. They also have to be skinny jeans as baggy jeans generally make one look old.

Even just good sneakers would have been fine, or boots.

It’s okay Hack, Corsi doesn’t approve of my dressing down Italian whole-cuts either. Footwear philosophies differ wildly in this thread.

Dressing down wholecuts is a very downtown Calgary look.
