Anyway, this is the consultant I hired for her. I'm sure she would have contacts for the guys' side of things:

Anyone can spend their money on anything they want, without having to justify it to anyone else. However, if you want to look like you're homeless, you can do it for substantially less than $1,462. I legitimately don't have a clue where someone would wear that outfit to. My closest guesses are a hipster coffee shop, camping, or busker at Granville Island. I would never wear that to work, a restaurant, hockey game, golf club, beach, movies, grocery store, or interview.

What age group wears this? Maybe I'm too old for this trend. Maybe I'm too young. Maybe I'm too skinny. I prefer my clothes to fit instead of looking like I'm wearing a burlap sack. I prefer pants that are tailored to the proper length. Maybe I'm too conservative, since I wear suits to the office, but if I was going out to dinner or to the movies, and I wasn't wearing a suit, I'd wear something like these, depending on the occasion.

Dinner at the golf club:

Date night at a fancy restaurant and/or show:

Casual drinks at the pub, minus the headphones and toque:

Wow, you dress up big time. I try not to wear nice clothes to the movies because I'm worried the layered butter will leak onto my clothes. Your casual pub outfit is literally fancier than anything I've worn for any occasion (not including one funeral) in the past two years.

I swear I don't see people in my real life dressed like this. Maybe it's because my day job is in the Foothills Industrial Park or because I usually just go to my neighbourhood pub, but I'd be totally weirded out if I showed up somewhere and people looked like that.

I think I treat every single thing I do as a come-as-you-are event. Wouldn't occur to me to change into a specific outfit to go to the pub with my friends. They all dress more or less like me, too.

I'm really going to take note of what other people my age are wearing at the things I do. I continue to be absolutely blown away by this thread and it's starting to make me really uneasy about the way I dress. Wish I never even started reading it, TBH.

Other than work / interview and maybe the beach, that outfit is totally fine for literally any of those things. It's just good relaxed casual wear. This type of workwear stuff has been popular for over a decade. And yes, you can do it for way less than $1400 for an outfit. The only reason to spend that much on it is either that you don't care how much money you're spending, or you have specific wants in terms of the materials and textures you're after. But if you think the guy in that photo looks "homeless", well, it's time to stop posting and re-evaluate your entire outlook on life.

To assume you're asking these questions non-rhetorically, pretty much any age group over 20 can wear this type of outfit successfully, though I actually do think it looks better on someone with a bit of grey in their beard.

This just sounds like sartorial rule worship. Which is fine if you're not particularly adventurous and you just want to look presentable all the time but it's not much fun.

Also, if you wear a suit to go to the movies, other than a premiere of a movie you're actually in, there's something very wrong with you. Also who wears a suit to go out to dinner? I guess if it's a casual suit, sure, go nuts, but if you're going out like Henrik Lundqvist in a Barney's shoot because you're taking your bumble date to Una I'd be worried about you chopping her up and dumping her in the Bow afterwards.

Those loafers are pretty awful with the rest of that. Frankly loafers are rarely the move.

I work in a pretty creative field and would never wear a suit to the office. With clients, yes. Sure, I would wear a suit, and my suits tend to be very conservative.

It's pretty funny you don't know who Nigel Cabourn is. He's probably the biggest name in casual wear. As for the actual clothes, that kind of workwear has been in style for awhile and silhouettes generally are moving toward being looser, much like the actual clothes from the 1940s to 1960s that Cabourn is reproducing.

Also, dinner at the golf club? Lol.

Here's an important question for you guys. Is it possible this thread is just a bubble? Like, for the general public how common is it for people to dress like you guys are talking about in here?

Just thinking I'm the normal one and you guys are the outliers. Kind of looking for a reality check here. You guys seriously getting dolled up to go to Brewsters on wing night?

I can only speak for myself and the people I know, but we dress far more like you than like most of the posts here. I wouldn't sweat it.

You are seeing a pretty strong mix of hobbyist stuff (like everything I have posted is basically just clothes I personally find cool) and genuinely good tips about how to wear clothes.

I posted a $450 jacket from Nigel Cabourn and Pepsi posted a much cheaper version from Uniqlo. Both work in the same situation. To be honest, only a hobbyist or nerd would probably notice the Cabourn coat, which is fine!

That said, in my personal bubble of more creative types, you would find that an interest in designer clothes is common, and often necessary to how one presents oneself in a business setting.

Squiggs is a lawyer, I think? That's probably the last bastion of conservative dressing in our society, so it makes sense he is recommending suits. I would only wear a suit to the office if I had a meeting with a high profile conservative client. Otherwise, I'm just wearing expensive workwear of the kind I posted.

You're right. Most of the times when I look around, you're probably closer to the norm than some of us in here.

Question is, are you planning on blending in or is your goal to look good? You also don't need to go to Brewsters for wing night wearing a blazer and a tie. If you think that's excessive, then it is excessive and that's ok.

With that said, the outfit I posted a page back with the stan smiths, chinos and t shirt, I'd be comfortable wearing that out for wing night. In my opinion, be slightly better dressed than most of the people at an event and you'll stand out in a good way. Don't, however, be the weirdo that shows up to your friend's basement to watch a Flames game dressed like Henrik Lundquist.

Literally nobody but the weirdos (Squiggs) are doing that.

Like I said earlier, if I'm going to the pub I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt, sneakers, and a very casual jacket and/or ballcap depending on the weather or whatever.

If you'll notice, most recommendations are for a specific occasion or setting. There were a lot of recommendations regarding business casual because someone was specifically asking about business casual, so on, so forth.

Please ignore anyone who says they wear a suit to the movies or wear loafers to dinner at the golf club. They are definitely the outliers and honestly their opinions are just never going to apply to the average person. But if you're wearing jeans, or shorts, or a t-shirt, or whatever, the reality check you need is that there are ways to wear all of those same things and look great. You don't have to, but you can, and you don't even have to spend more to do it.

There are some posts with people saying "oh I like this jacket" or whatever, but that shouldn't be taken as any sort of advice that you should then go and wear that jacket at Brewsters if you want to look good.

Loafers are fine, but most of the time they are worn as a more formal shoe. I like the beef roll penny loafers worn the way they should be worn.

I have this pair and I've worn the hell out of them for years, but with like old shorts.

I guess looking just fine is more my goal than looking good and maybe there is something nice about blending in. I pluck my eyebrows, trim my nose hair, keep the back of my neck shaved (every second day) and don't wear dirty or stained clothes. Maybe that's as far as I need to go as it's worked for me this long.

You guys definitely have a neat hobby and I can kind of see the appeal and your enthusiasm shows in a way that's fun to follow along with. I'll go back to spectator mode now on this one. Thanks.

I think it's good to remember that this thread is specifically for people who care.

If you don't care, then I doubt anyone else here cares for you. And even if they did, you wouldn't care what they think, so it doesn't matter anyway.

If you do care, then this thread is for you.

It's like a car thread. Nobody who just sees a car as a box on wheels that gets them from point A to point B is going to enter a car enthusiast thread, and nobody who is paying close attention to what BMW is doing or whatever is going to care to convince that person why they should care about cars without prompt. But, if that person says "hey, it's time for something new, what should I be looking at?" then the conversation starts.

But honestly, if you don't care, keep living your life and be happy. That's more important than anything else. Literally none of this stuff actually matters if you decide it doesn't.

I might see someone who I think is dressed poorly, but if they're truly happy with how they look... then damn... that's beautiful.

How? Considering how much linen is going on there it's almost unrealistically clean. Frankly it'd probably look better a bit more wrinkled up and lived in.
