I think the most hilarious part of this thread has been the hysterical right-wingers complaining about cancel culture when most of this thread and the online discourse I've seen on the topic has been "what did he mean?" and "he probably shouldn't be fired."

You're a hysterical right winger because I say so. And I don't want to hear you whining about it since you're able to identify right wingers at will. So can I and you're one of them. Right winger.

The fact that's it was even a question and this thread even exists validates all the 'cancel culture' posts you laugh at.

My only question is, how do you test positive for rum? Breathalyzer?
On that note I don't believe that's what he meant by testing positive and rather than owning up to what he said he made this up and then followed with a typical Ron Maclean word salad.

You're right. There's definitely been no other era in the history of broadcast media where something someone has said was misconstrued and overreacted to by the general public.
I mean, in a BAC context, you could probably say that. I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. He doesn't have a sordid history of saying homophobic things and he's already apologized.
If you told me two nights ago I would be defending Ron I would have called you something much worse than what Ron said.
Seriously, this is ridiculous...wanting someone to lose their job over this? really? I hope you don't walk around naked in your glass houses. Ron is the last person the PC principals of the world should want fired he is all about inclusion.
Guy was on the air until 3AM and then on again the next day for 6 hours trying to make a joke on the spot. It came off wrong and he apologized.
the end
Agree 100%. This discussion is a colossal waste of everyone's time.

OK, but I still maintain that this explanation makes no sense whatsoever. Even leaving aside the notion that someone would be "positive for rum" - as if that's a thing anyone has ever said in the history of the English language - the notion that having a shirtless picture of a guy on the shelf behind you would entail that you've had too much to drink is such a total non sequitur that it doesn't even qualify as a joke.
I guess I'll believe him because it's not like he has a history of saying this kind of stuff the way Cherry does but... yeah. Still makes no sense.
