May 5th U-18 Semi-finals update:
It will be Canada-Russia for gold.
Russia 6-Finland 5:
Samu Salminen with 2g (Captain of the team-big C who's looked very good, but needs to work on his skating, 9pts in 6gp), Heimosalmi with 2a (D-man with 8pts in 6gp), Tuomaala with 1a (11pts in 6gp), Miettinen with 1g (only 1pt). For Russia, Svechkov with 2a (10 pts in 6gp), Chibrikov with 2g/1a (13 pts), Michkov with 1g (13pts with 11goals).
Finland has some good D in Jimi Suomi, Viljami Juusola, and Aleksi Heimosalmi (top scoring D in the tourney)-they've all looked very good.
Canada 8-Sweden 1:
Clarke 1a (6pts), Othmann 1g/1a (5pts), Wright 1g/3a (11pts in 4gp), Cuelemans 1a (7pts in 5gp, second leading scorer for D, very eye-opening for me), Bedard 3g (12pts), McTavish 1a (11pts), Stillman 1g (3pts), Pinelli 1g (11pts), Roulette 1g (5pts), Winterton 1a (4pts).
For Sweden, Edvinsson 1a, Lysell 1a, Rosen 1g.

We’re into 9th in the reverse standings. Sunday is a huge game for the Flames. The Flames could get into 8th in the reverse standings.

@Sandman thanks for posting the end of game summary stats.
Who has impressed you the most? Any players we should be heavily looking at with our pick? Any players we should be looking at grabbing in the 2nd/3rd round?

That would be huge. What annoys me is that 9th really means 10th if you count Seattle.

I’d rather they get a top 5 pick in this draft than 2020, 2022, or 2023. There’s not even a consensus #1 pick in this draft.

Unfortunately the flames final 4 games against the nucks will probably take them out of top 10. Vancouver like Calgary seem to have given up.

I still like Clarke over Cuelemans but quite a tournament for the latter.
Michkov vs Bedard is going to be a league wide reset of power balance a la crosby-ovechkin it seems.

Looking at the standings today, it's really important that the Flames not do anything stupid like winning some of these remaining games. Very easy for them to vault past a few teams in the standings - and down the draft order - and much harder for them to go the other way. A couple of points could make a huge difference to where they draft now.

Stone, Ritchie, Nordstrom, and Nesterov will drive us to victory. The 15th overall pick is ours.

I counted Seattle. I believe they’ll be given the same odds as the 3rd worst team. We’re in 9th in the draft order/lottery odds with Seattle.

It would be very torturous if we won the lottery this year.

As of right now, the Flames are in 24th overall. With Seattle added to the draft, that has them picking 9th overall which isn't too bad. The Flames are only 6 points up on 30th...if the Flames play down to their potential, they can finish pretty low. I think the Sabres have last place locked in. The one downfall is that they've only played 51 games and everyone else except Vancouver(48) have played more games. The Flames need to really fall off a cliff to get down that low while other teams need to start playing better.
Knowing the Flames they'll go on a tear because games don't matter to them now. The Flames are tied with the Sens right now and only 2 points up on Detroit, those were the teams people made fun of and considered them the worst teams. The Flames are one of the worst teams in the league, it's not just a down year for them. They're just a poorly built bad team. Look at the numbers and see if you can find a reason this team should stay together or give up assets at this point. They're not a few players away from being a contender, they're a few good players from being a bubble playoff team.
Tear it down and burn it. Rebuild properly.

The Flames just don't seem to have much luck in their bad years. When we were flush with cap space in our rebuild, no one was in cap hell. Rumour is a couple cap deals for first rounders fell through. To top it off the 2014 draft wasn't really that strong. This time around the, the whole pandemic thing and sucking when the next few draft look like the game changers.
At this point you hope that the scouting department has a field day grabs a diamond in the rough (please hockey gods, let it be the Oilers 3rd rounder)

At least limits (you can only win twice in five years) don't kick in until 2022.
That means we COULD win the lottery this year, 2022, and 2023.
...wouldn't that be swell?
