Some are stars like Eichel or Seth jones or John Gibson or kopitar and doughty. Unless zacha becomes a superstar not sure he is ruining our chances at top picks. If he is a superstar isn’t that the point?

I could see hanifin being in a deal to NJ too. Not saying I think he gets traded but I still think he might. McLeod might be a sneaky cheap pick up. He’s probably dropped in the pecking order in NJ. Love to get the 2 firsts they have too. I bet they probably keep zacha at this point
I've been saying for years we should try to snag McLeod. Watched a lot of his juniors and he's exactly what this team needs. Would be sweet too because he could play against his brother up north. We can have the better McLeod.

To NJ: Gaudreau
To Cgy: Sharangovich, McLeod, 2021 2nd, 2022 2nd

That's interesting. They get the best player but given the Flames cap situation, that's inevitable in a Gaudreau trade unless you trade for an older player.

Accumulating second round picks makes it easier to move up if they won't give up a first.

Definitely need a 1st with a chance of it being good. I would let NJ talk to him about an extension before the trade.

McLeod instantly replaces Ryan at minimum. Actually, that's two center for Gaudreau and both are young enough to streamline a re-tool.

Looking at Sharangovichs production I'm not sure we would be getting a pick back in return. 2x 22 year old centers. Both middle 6 centers. Cost certainty, cap flexibility. There's a lot of winning on the Flames end even without the pick or picks.

I don't think they give up sharangovich, he has found great chemistry with Hughes.

But we can still hit Jersey up for some fantastic assets. Their 1st, Mercer/Holtz, Mcleod would be a great package for e.g.

you have to target 2022 or 2023 first rounders, even if it means you take less overall.

Mercer + Macleod + 2022 1st (lottery protected) sounds close.

Flames might have to add a pick or B prospect considering the salary differential in the deal. The Devils have no mid-range contracts to speak of that could come back. Other than Subban they have nobody over 26 under contract next season. Fitzgerald has done an impressive job of clearing the decks and opening cap space.

If you look at Chicago when they got Toews and Kane, they already had a ton of young pieces in place. Good young players that were playing good hockey and were a tough team to beat but were just missing their star players.

I would love to see the Flames play next year with guys like McLeod, Mangiapane, Dube, Ruzicka, Phillips, Valimaki, Rasmus, Mackey, Hanifin and whoever else we could get in deals involving guys like Tkachuk and Monahan

That's half your roster that has ton of potential but no way would be good enough to ruin your draft position. Especially if guys like Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk are gone. I'd also assume if those 3 were gone we would have extra firsts in the next 2 drafts.

Lindholm, Tanev, Backlund, Gio would still leave us some vets to help this team stay in games nightly as I would rather see these guys not lose 5 to 0 every night and at least be a team that loses 3 to 2 nightly

I'm still ok to keep Tkachuk but only if he resigns this summer as long as the cap hit isn't $9 mil and it's a long term deal

I'm no medical professional, maybe someone can answer this. Did Patrick have migraine issues in Brandon during his WHL time? Not that Brandon has the elevation/climate Calgary does. Is it possible that you grow up in a specific environment (western Canada) and changing to Philly sets them off? A return back out here and they go away? Is that a thing? Maybe its not the pressure that Calgary has to set him off, but a difference from what he's accustom too? Either way though, a regular season will see him hit all different places and seems risky. Unless its a low cost acquisition, I don;t think its worth it. But the Bennett fresh start is enticing here for a Patrick flier.

I think we’re underrating Dawson Mercer as a prospect. It would be an absolute coup to steal him from Jersey. Johnny for Mercer and another asset.

When I was looking up Patrick’s injury history I believe the migraines were not an issue until last year. He has been injured a ton though and missed 1/4 of his junior career to injury. He had 2 healthish seasons when he started with the Flyers and scored 30osh points in 70ish games. He is getting to that point where he probably would love a fresh start.

Weird retool trade here that will likely get shredded.

To Flyers: Gaudreau
To Flames: JVR/Ghost (cap)+ Patrick + Frost

It is buying low on Patrick and Frost but those are 2 young centers who could work for a retool as they are both 23 and could step in right away but develop in 2-3 years. JVR/Ghost would be exposed in expansion and whichever one we get goes unclaimed they still fill a short term need.

Planning for 23 year old replacement level players developing into stars within 2-3 years is going to leave you very disappointed.

Most star forwards should already be playing at an extremely high level by age 23. Patrick and Frost might become useful players, but the odds they become top 6 impact players is small.

Yikes... switch Patrick to Philly’s 2022 1st. We’re doing them a solid taking on JVR.

Sharangovich might be a legit top line winger. The kid has a great shot. Not sure NJ let's go of him.

Agreed that Mercer would be the key asset coming back. I think Macleod might be a little overrated as he’s shaping up to be more of a depth role guy than a scorer. But yeah, a more palatable deal from the Devil’s POV is Mercer and either Macleod or a 1st.

I like the MacLeod brothers, but they’ve always seemed like big guys who can skate extremely well, and not much else.

I would want Foote and Mercer in a return for Johnny, that would help. And if we are trading Matthew as well (rumor based mind you) I would want equivalent, if not a little more in return.
