Having Gaudreau, Lindholm, Eichel, Mangiapane, Dube, Zary and Pelletier to build around up front could work if the young guys continue to progress.

To clarify, I think it would cost more than Tkachuk and Monahan. A 1st (or 2) would need to be included as well as a top prospect (or 2).
Eichel is having an off year but is a legitimate #1 forward.
But even then Calgary should definitely pull a deal of Tkachuk + Monahan + 1st + any prospect on the table that Buffalo wants. Even then I don't know what Buffalo would say but whatever it takes in my opinion.

You are having quite the thread here. I'm a hater not in touch with reality? I think I'm being pretty grounded expecting a 2nd or 3rd round pick for what will be a close to 39 year old defenseman at the next deadline. I think if his play doesn't fall off much next season from where he is now I think he could fetch a 2nd round pick but it's fair to expect that he will decline year over year and when is the last time a 38 year old player fetched a 1st round pick at the trade deadline?

Gio doesn’t have a full NMC and can only block 12 teams next deadline so this isn’t Hall or Iggy forcing a bad trade to the team of their choice.
|
Savard was worth a 1st when he got discounted 75%. Gio is probably worth a 1st at 50%. So, if we are willing to take on 3.375m dead space for a season, then we can definitely get a 1st. There has to be retention though.

Love Sutter, but it has to be brutally clear to him that this is not akin to what he inherited in Calgary last go around, nor LA.

I believe Lindholm is quietly making a case that he is a pretty good number one center. Plays both ends of the ice well. Currently tied for 18th in points among center men, plays pretty tough. Is he the best in the league? Of course not, but he's right around the level of many players in the league that many of us have been clamoring for, including Point, Barzal, Zibanejad etc.

I wonder what Lindholm's trade value would be.
Most of us agree he's probably the best player on his team, and his contract is fantastic while still having term left.
But at the same time, it seems like few people outside of the Flames realize how good he is.
Obviously I don't think he should be traded. He should be the organization's most valuable asset, but I'm not sure if he actually would be. I think Lindholm, even while underrated, probably has more trade value than Tkachuk because of Tkachuk's $9 mill QO requirement. But I don't think the gap is huge.
I also wonder if the Flames are thinking about making him the next captain. People have brought up Mangiapane and Lucic as well for assistants.
We don't really know what goes on in the dressing room or in practice, so it's tough to predict. But it would be cool to reward the few consistent players on the team.

Same thing I said in the 2020 offseason, the 2019 offseason and the 2018 offseason and the same thing I’m going to say in the 2022 offseason.

IMO, I respectfully disagree. Lindholm is the better player today and will have half the cap hit for a couple years after next year when Tkachuk gets qualified. IMO, his trade value should be considerably higher.

On the front office side:
Everyone but Darryl must go. Brad, Tod Button, Pro scouts, amateur scouts, Euro scouts, Conroy, Sigalet, Cassie Campbell’s husband, Maloney, all of them.
GTFO.
On the players side:
13, 19, and 23 should be traded. Ideally within 72 hours of each other, for packages that include picks in drafts that aren’t this one.
Then, the healing can begin.

I mean look at past examples. How do you conclude that Gio will only muster the same return that Rittich got or less of a return than what Bennett got when Defensemen command a higher price at the deadline especially ones that can play well in all situations.
Deadline Flames eat 50% like they do for Rittich they can’t get more than late picks?
Marty St.Louis and Keith Tkachuk are the only examples of late 30’s guys I can think of going for 1st rounders but there are a ton of worse players that have moved for a 1st. It is also splitting hairs here but Gio will be closer to 38 than 39 at the deadline as he will not turn 39 until the 22/23 season is underway.
I still remember the Sharks getting 2 2nd rounders for Douglas Murray when he wasn’t even a top 4 Dman. Flames got a 2nd and 3rd for Glencross they got a 2nd, prospect drafted in the second and a tweener for Kris Russell. Don’t think about the age, think about the player. Gio will get more than a 2nd at the deadline unless he is hurt or truly takes multiple steps back to where he is questionable to still be in the league.
Gio is not a franchise defining number 1 Dman but he is certainly a good 2/3 on pretty much any team in the league.

If Lindholm is your #2C behind McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby, Eichel, Bergeron, Kopitar, etc, I think you can work with that.
If Lindholm is your #1C, you’re the Calgary Flames.

Agreed and the Flames have now done that with Rittich so I think they would do it with Gio as well

What does that have to do with the world outside of Calgary not knowing how good Lindholm is?

If we're blowing the team up, Gaudreau is crucial. Do you trade him while you can, or try and build around him?
I'd be in favour of trading some combination of Monahan/Tkachuk/(Valimaki or Andersson)/picks for Eichel and pairing him with Gaudreau, or a less expensive option of Larkin would be tempting too if possible.

I agree that the Flames have no chance in getting Eichel for Tkachuk and Monahan. Can't see it getting done for just those 2. The plus going back with Tkachuk needs to be a long term asset for Buffalo that nobody on here wants to give up. I think it is more likely to get done if guys like Mangiapane or Dube are added to Tkachuk as well as this years first
Tkachuk, Dube #1 Calgary 21
for
Eichel
Buffalo should consider something like this as they have a good young team and adding 2 top 10 picks this year with Dube gives them some insurance long term. I do think other teams probably out bid this and it may take a lottery win to get this deal done. But if that pick is first overall I'm not sure the Flames should do it.
If the Flames win first overall pick does anyone think this type of deal is possible?
#1 Calgary 21 and Lucic
For
#1 Detroit 21 (assuming they don't win the lottery and get 2nd pick)
Also candidates could be SJ, LA, OTT. A team picking around 6th to 8th overall. I personally think the Flames needs 1 of the players slotted their just as much but wonder if some of these teams would be excited to land Powers and be willing to take Lucic to get first overall pick.

It is completely insane. Seattle isn't taking Gio in the expansion draft either. There will be much better and younger talent available. Tanev would be taken by Seattle for sure.
