I think the Leafs 3rd in 2022 will be used to protect Gio

I like it. Gives us a better shot at Wright, Labert, or Savoie. Maybe even Bedard in 2023.
If they go with the same core, they can expect the same results.

I think the Flames will protect Tanev and offer no side deals.
If choosing between Gio or Kylington, I think they may take Phillips as they will need players on the cusp of making it.
They have 31 players they will draft in addition to those they will gain through side deals...Not all their players can play on the main roster and Phillips is well positioned to play in the AHL and provide depth (assuming he passes through waivers).

Dube will not be exposed in the expansion draft.

Yeah, I guess with Bennett out, they can add Dube to the protection list easily. Didn't think of that earlier.

Dube will need to be protected, but I don't see any reason to think he won't be.
Assuming Lucic waives his NMC, the Flames protected list for forwards at this time looks like: Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Backlund, Dube, Mangiapane.

No doubt. I think Bennett would've been the one left exposed, which was one of the reasons that Conroy and Treliving alluded to for making the decision to deal him.
Management is high on Dube - except for maybe Sutter.

Yup. Bennett would have been exposed and probably taken, which makes the return even better.
As for Dube and Sutter, Sutter did, after the tough level earlier, put him with Mangiapane and Monahan and praise him afterwards. Dube seems to have the exact same consistency issues as Mangiapane did at this point. I think he’s going to be very good.

Good. Disaster averted!
I still think Kylington is the guy they would pick. I just think his value vs. potential is better than the known values that the other players available have. Francis is under no pressure to "win-now".

Even if Sutter doesn't like him, there's still likely more value in trading Dube than leaving him exposed.

You leave Gio unprotected all day long.
And you don't make side deals to keep him with dreams of trading him at the deadline for a decent pick......he could play even worse next season or even be injured at the deadline. You don't take that risk.

Assuming things go as I think they should the Kraken have a choice of a really really old D who costs a lot (though their cap isn’t an issue, cash may be) but has a name value, a talented young D who no coach seems to like much and a completely NHL-untested tiny forward. All of whom have 1 year on their deal (albeit Kylington and Phillips are controlled).
Or they could pull an Engelland and choose to sign Derek Ryan, who is sort of local, won’t cost much and who can be pretty useful on an expansion team filled with young guys.

Agreed, however, I'd expose Backlund before I expose Dube TBQH.
I also don't think Seattle would be interested in taking Kylington over Giordano. Kylington is a guy that recently passed through waivers. Every team has their own Kylington probably.
While Seattle is not expected to win right out of the gates, the recent Vegas expansion story puts a little pressure on them to not be running "Young Guns". Giordano is a good zero risk pickup for them.

Darryl and owners would protect Gio so it’s doesnt matter if Tre is here or not.

Out of curiosity, why? Pride? Allegiance to the Flames?
If Looch is going to Seattle, at that point he should want what’s best for Seattle

The only side deal I’d consider is to pay something for the Kraken to take Lucic, but then only with Lucic’s blessing. I love Lucic but to get rid of that contract would be worth something.

While I understand this viewpoint and I too think the Flames should protect Tanev, Hanifin and Anderson, I can also understand that Treliving and the Flames have more to think about with regards to Giordano given his tenure and status in Calgary. They are also looking after their brand and trying to always operate in ways that align with the culture of the organization and seeing players as more than simply assets and trade chips is a key part of this culture. Management would probably agree with you that it would be very Calgary Flames, but for entirely different reasons.
Having said that, I think they pay Seattle to not take Giordano.

Harming the franchise to protect an obviously deteriorating 38 year old defenseman would be incredibly stupid. Not even for a 7th or something paltry like that. We need all the prospects we can get over the next 3-4 years.

Is this for real? Of course you protect Tanev over Giordano. That is a no brainer. Gio is a great guy, but he's going to be 38 by time the next season rolls around and will have a hefty price tag. There is no way Seattle is going to take a 38 year old who is on an underperforming contract.

What other player can they pick from the Flames exposed list can they use to trade for a second or third round pick in the 2022 or 2023 draft?
The Kraken still need to get to the cap floor, and come the trade deadline if they retain 50% of his salary and maybe even use another team to broker a deal to get his cap hit down to something like 1.7 for the last quarter of the season, I think there is a chance to get something back.

Expose Gio? I was in favor of trading him at the trade deadline with 50% retained for whatever the Flames could get.
