There doesn't seem to be a ton of consensus that the prospect returned is any good. I think Jiri noted he wasn't even on some scouts pre-draft lists.
I think it's fair to analyze the deal in it's entirety. Treliving has a pretty well documented history of trading away mid to late round picks and our weak prospect pool is evidence of that history.
I don't think it's the end of the world that he traded away a 6th round pick, I just simply think the Flames are in no position to be trading away draft picks at any level. I don't think that's a very controversial take.
|
I think it’s an exceptionally foolish take, complaining he traded a 6 round pick in a trade where he got a second round pick.
So, you would have passed on the deal instead?

So much this.
I've posted in other threads that this is exactly the guy you need to bring your prospects along. They can play decent minutes without getting their teeth kicked in. Normally, you shelter rookies with last change, Ryan lets you get them minutes on the road, because you know they aren't going to get owned on a bad matchup.
If you can get him at 2.5M on a 2 year deal you do it before the deadline.
Hot take: I think the fact that they were shopping him hard is that Seattle as expressed interest in taking him in the expansion draft.

They dont need to take him....he is UFA, but like it was with Engelland and Vegas they may do so anyhow as he is a local(ish) guy and would be a great mentor for the plethora of young guys they will end up with.

Per Conroy’s interview on the Fan, they got a late call on Derek Ryan but was too late, too quick to act on. Gotta love conny, honest, perhaps too honest to a fault.
Maybe had to broker salary through a third team? Too bad they couldn’t swing it, but good day overall by the management group getting the two deals done.

He talked like the call came within 5 minutes of 1pm. Probably some team that saw other deals fall through.

TAMPERING, just like reporters asking Holland about Taylor Hall and he said I can't talk about other teams players.

Its not tampering.
If Francis and Treliving are discussing players and BT asks him who he would take from players XYZ and Francis answers him...thats just 2 GMs talking shop.

I was honestly expecting lesser returns for both guys, so I think Treliving did a good job. Especially considering the prices paid this trade deadline were pretty underwhelming for the most part.

Assets to stop Seattle from picking a certain player perhaps

I’ll be mad if they spend assets for Seattle to pass on a player.

Maybe this was it?
At center, the Oilers and Flames flirted on Derek Ryan talks, but again the deal didn’t advance too far because the Flames weren’t overly interested in a veteran like Chiasson and the Oilers weren’t in a position to move their third-round pick next season following the Kulikov deal.

The way Conroy described it, the last minute one didn’t even get to that kind of detail.

I will too but I’m prepared for the Flames to try and protect all of Hanifin, Andersson, Tanev and Gio.
I can’t see them exposing Gio and it would be stupid to expose Tanev.
They will trade a pick for Seattle to take Kylington I bet.
I don’t agree with it but it’s what I expect.

Gio is 100% expendable.
It's about the future of the club now. This group used up their chance to make this about them and keeping the gang together.
The split up was completely preventable, and they let it come to this, led by Giordano.
Seattle taking him would be doing us a favour at his salary. Sincerely hope management sees that reason over sentimentality.
I would love the restart that shedding his or Lucic' salary would present the team, with Ryan, Bennett and Rittich also coming off the books.
Maybe the GM could finally go use that money wisely, and a couple savvy signings along with a Gaudreau or Monahan trade could help spur on a quick retool.
Pending UFAs include: Palmieri, RNH, Landeskog, Hall, Gallagher, Getzlaf, Iaffalo, Danault, Saad, Kreicji, and ####ing Alex Ovechkin (foregone conclusion he re-ups with WSH, but we can throw the bank at him, right?).
Landeskog would be a monster add from both a skill and leadership perspective.

I would LOVE to get Landeskog. I would also love to get the Tenderness-it would piss them off so much!

Iaffalo was re-signed yesterday by L.A., just FYI.
