Brent Sutter Steps Down as Coach of the Rebels

"After lots of thought and consideration of all the variables that go into being a head coach, at this time I feel this is the right thing for our organization. Being involved in the game as long as I have both as a player and head coach, I've never looked at the game selfishly. The most important thing has always been what's best for the Hockey Club. Since we were shut down over a year ago, it has been a very difficult and trying time for all of us, especially the players. In my heart I know this is the right thing to do, and is best for them at this point in time. They need a different voice for the rest of this season and moving forward." Brent Sutter, President/General Manager

If he signs before noon on Monday he can play for us in the playoffs.

With Darryl’s busy, someone else has to mend the ranch. Logical.

I recommend the recent Spittin Chicklets podcast episode with Brent. It was very, very entertaining and he sounds like he is crazy busy and wearing too many hats right now.

He's owned the team for 22 years, and outside of his 5 year NHL coaching stint, been the coach and GM as well for the other 17 years.
With a Covid calender year basically ruining any of the normal routine of a coach, GM and owner, probably makes sense to take a step back and focus on some of the other duties or the organization, not the coaching. There are at least two other Sutters with the organization there that will likely assist there.

I can see Francis feverishly writing up his next glib article, shooting down the strawman argument he creates of the likelihood of Brent coming to the Flames, as he cannot wait to again trot out the "but the brothers don't talk" scandal he sensationalized 10 years ago when they were both here.

I know it wasn't a serious suggestion, but despite his unsuccessful coaching stint with the Flames, I imagine running all the aspects of a major junior team for as long as he did, gives you a lot of transferable skills that would be important for running an NHL team. If he ever wanted to be in an NHL front office position, I think there are teams that would hire him.

Some, though there are some huge differences. You never are stuck with a bad player - at worst they are there for 3-4 years, or you just cut them. They are all super happy to be there. No cap. Trades are a lot more rare and generally are one pattern. You just go and find good players and draft them.

I really do wonder if Darryl brings in Brent to be an Assistant Coach.. not sure if they have worked together in this capacity and maybe something they want to try out.
