Maybe it's the pessimist in me after losing 8 of the last 9 games, but I don't see how this team is going to be against the cap once we trade a few of the core guys, and other overpaid guys like Bennett and Ryan are off the books.
I mean, unless they go all in and trade for Eichel I guess. So we'll see what happens this off season. Either way, there has to be big changes coming up IMO.

I’d also retain 50% on Gio, Johnny, and Monahan. This will maximize the return and force the flames to not spend to the cap next year or ice the most competitive team. This will force them into a 2 year retool where they will draft high in 2022 as well. I feel like the Flames need to be protected from themselves. They don’t seem to be able to identify when it’s time to rebuild and always try to stay afloat when it’s actually time to sink.

Gio arguably has more value next TDL on an expiring contract than he does at this TDL, even with salary retained. Which is actually a reason for hoping Seattle doesn't take him or protecting him - if you think you can get a good asset next deadline for him.

If they were going full rebuild, I would retain on Johnny and Monny for sure. I think they HAVE to retain on Gio if they want a team to take him.
Is there a limit on how many players you can retain salary on?

Except, by not trading him now you allow Seattle to pick him and then eat 50% at the next tdl. His value is highest now to a playoff team. If his new team only has him for this playoff run, what would be the difference if you waited to trade him at next years tdl? That team would only have him for 1 playoff run. Eat salary now. Move out Johnny, Monahan, and Gio now. Retool and move on.

Well, the Canadiens wanted him and got him. And now he has 14 goals, more than any Flames player...

Anderson had an injury riddled season last year. The guy would look awesome on the Flames and would have been a great pickup. WAY better than Johnny or Monahan has been.
We need to get off our high horse here, our current roster is not very good, and the players themselves are not exactly highly sought after pieces. Getting either Anderson or Dubois would have been an improvement IMO.

I still wouldn't have liked an Anderson trade for the Flames, trading Monahan for him in the offseason would have been ridiculous.
Sure the guy started off hot in Montreal but he's been just as bad as Monahan the last 20 games, and isn't any better than him defensively.
Anderson has 5 goals and 8 points in Montreal's last 20 games.
Monahan has 4 goals and 9 points in the Flames last 20 games.
Anderson is very overrated and that contract is going to be an albatross very very soon.

Anderson's underlying numbers are a hell of a lot better than Monahan's atleast.
Anderson is a competent even strength player, Monahan is not.
CF%: 54.70
SF%: 55.29
GF%: 54.29
xGF%: 56.19
SCF%: 52.52
HDCF%: 55.12
HDGF%: 62.50
Vs.
CF%: 48.54
SF%: 47.91
GF%: 51.52
xGF%: 50.16
SCF%: 48.19
HDCF%: 48.15
HDGF%: 56.25
I think the off-season goal was to have centre depth that read: Lindholm, Backlund, Bennett, Ryan. They failed to move Monahan for the RW piece they wanted, and the results are what they are.

If the Flames are competing for a playoff spot next year they won't be selling at the deadline. They did that with Glencross one year but that was a team with a new GM who took over in the midst of a rebuild. Unlikely we see that scenario unfurl next year.

We sold Hudler and Russell in 2016 and then went right back to competing for a playoff spot the following season.

It was an albatross as soon as Montreal Signed it. Still would have been a terrible trade for the flames.
Perhaps we can relieve Columbus of Laine now though.

I'm not lost on all hope of this roster for the most part. I go back to how absolutely awful the Avs were at one point with their core and they bounced back.
Really depends on how Management navigates this offseason and and next. They really need to figure things out.

Don't think I've ever wanted the Flames to go on a losing streak as badly as right now. They have a legit chance at a top draft pick. On top of that the pandemic has muddled who really is the top draft choice. With proper scouting the Flames have a great opportunity to pull out an absolute gem. I think it'll be tough to outsuck the bottom 3 teams, but a bottom 4 or 5 finish would be fantastic.

That's a fairly disingenuous way to look at things.
How about career totals? You are comparing Anderson's best season to Monahan's worst. It's also less than half a season's sample size. Monahan's "possession" numbers are slightly better over their respective careers.
For some additional perspective if Josh Anderson was shooting at the same percentage Sean Monahan was this season he would be sitting with 12 points in 32 games...

Haha, Jiri, it's like you have never been a fan of this team. The Flames way is that they won't trade him, will protect him and then not trade him next trade deadline because they are close to a playoff spot or some such...
