...ah crap, I hope that’s not the stage we hit in the off-season...
All Flames fans know fruitless hockey. There have only been 3-5 seasons spread out across the last 30 years that haven’t been “fruitless”, despite what we try and tell ourselves. Just sneaking into the playoffs and hoping to win a series, but ultimately missing the playoffs or getting destroyed in round 1 should not be considered “fruitful” to any degree.

One thing is for sure, there are no guarantees whether it is bottoming out and being a lottery team for a few seasons, or if it is retooling over and over. Either way is a essentially lottery. You need to capitalize on your draft picks, trades, and free agency signings. Retooling hasn't proved successful, so I am ready to go the other route.
Not to mention it is hard to retool when you aren't a destination free agents take reasonable money to go to, or when you are on the no-trade list for a large number of players. It should be easier in theory to at least draft better players if you get a few top picks.

This season is already lost. Contracts are coming to an end for players in the “prime” of their careers that we should be able to extract value from - and, as you mention - we’ve got 2022 and 2023 shaping up with very strong top-ends of the draft. All of this is leading right into a new arena in 2024.
I see the opportunity the Flames have right now and just hope they go for it. Tank for the next 2 seasons. Having Darryl at the helm to make sure developing players don’t take any short cuts is also a huge benefit.
...one can dream.

Darryl will certainly make sure they don’t play

The very fact the owners pushed Sutter on Treliving suggests to me they have no interest in a rebuild.

Maybe a retool? Trade our problems for someone else's bigger, truculent problems

Highly speculated as such. A poster here posted that he knew an owner and he was pretty sure this was the case.

Either way, Sutter isn’t here for a rebuild. And he’s the third coach they are paying right now...
Sutter isn’t going anywhere, the team isn’t rebuilding for at least 2 years.

TBF, he never said he had any info about that precise fact. He said he’s close to one of the owners. And he suspects that they pushed the change, but had no actual intel about it.

As I recall he said ownership was "involved."

Just heard a trade speculation for the flames. The flames trade Brad T and the rights to Pizza Hut franchises in NY to Buffalo for a bag of pucks.

Season is over. Please Sureloss give us flames trade rumours everyday for the next week. At this stage of the game I don’t care if you are making them up yourself. Need something else flames related to talk about , instead of the season.

The post was just today, and I noticed that he (a) reminded us of the connection and then (b) said he suspected they were involved. If he knew more it would have been a stronger assertion.

Maybe the ownership pushed DS on BT because they did not realize how bad this team was. Maybe DS did not realize how bad the organization is.
Clearly, after 2019 playoffs with no push back it was clear this team was wrong in a big way and no changes were made. But Mr. BT instead listening to his advisors was listening to the players. Sure, good call BT. No conflict at all here.

I get the complexities of overhaul changes at this TD and the unlikelihood of finding a dance partner. But man oh man, it sure feels like selling our assets for even $.60 on the dollar is the best move at this point.
I keep thinking value can't get worse and then I watch another lifeless game from Sean Monahan. These assets are PLUMMETING right now.

Can I suggest that it is best to apply critical thinking in evaluating the written word, particularly in its context?
This forum is not a place where posts are the equivalent of peer reviewed journal publications
The spoken word of public figures is not the same as sworn testimony
Just saying. And here is an emoji for you

Was me. Correct Gio, I suspect they were involved but have no first hand knowledge. Just a suspicion.

I think we must think 3-4 years for collecting draft picks and young assets to build true contender.
I would trade Monahans, Hahifins for the 2022 draft picks or even 2023 draft picks. Take high draft pick with money dump for a year.
Other teams may give up 1st rounder for 2022 easier as they may think they can resell the players if the trade doesn't work.
Next season bring your best prospects and evaluate them.
But now they must sell all Ufa and Bennett for draft pick or some b prospects.

I love the dissection of this orange julius rumour.
1. Of course ownership would be involved, just as they would with any major personnel decision.
2. Specifically with Sutter, it would be odd if they weren't involved, given the pre-existing relationship.
3. Even if we had an audio recording of Murray telling his country-club buddies about what went down, it wouldn't necessarily be the most accurate version of the truth. Same goes for Brad, Darryl, or anyone else directly involved. Given the egos involved, people are going to frame things how they think looks most favourable to them.

I would be a little surprised If BT is not gone after this horrible season. I think the owners have no trust for BT. He sold them on Markstrom and Tanev this year. Neal a few years ago. etc etc etc. I think he is gone after this season that is exactly why DS is here, because BT is no longer trusted.

I think that the owners "involvement" rumor may be true, based on the look on Tre's face and his demeanor during the press conference to bring in DS. I thought he looked like he was sitting on a fork.
