Yeah, they're mediocre goaltending-wise, so they can't be good... but they're also bad at everything else. With the players they have, it just feels like they should be competitive.
Every team these days has strong centers, strong wingers, good puck moving defense, a good mixure of youth at veteran skill... there's little that separates teams talent-wise.

When Tavares left the Islanders, and they improved, it was at least partially a result of a coaching change.

A coach might not turn the Sabres into a contender, but I have to imagine someone like Boudreau could get them looking competitive.

Boudreau actually lives pretty close. He's in Hershey PA, which is 300 miles away from Buffalo.

ETA: That said, Kruger is being paid $3.9 through 2022. That's pretty hefty.

It's especially bad since most of his career playoff odds were like:

12/17 or 12/18 teams
then 16/21 teams.

A bit of a tangent, but for 50+ years teams had a 67-76% chance of making the playoffs.

Next year it will be 50/50. It's mind bottling to me why Bettman is against any sort of play-in. The season normally ends on a Sunday with nothing until Wednesday. Why not have a pair of 5v4 single play-in games on those days!?!?!?

This year, one of NYI, WAS, PIT, PHI, and BOS will miss, and will very likely have a better record than several playoff teams. Every year there is a division or two like this.

Well, Dionne was close to PPG in the POs so it wasn't his fault. It's funny - he was the 2OA after Lafleur and I imagine if he'd been picked first he'd have all those rings. And then, tired of losing in Detroit, he signed a huge contract - with LA.

I just read Dryden's book on/with Scotty Bowman. Was interesting to hear how close the decision was between those two, and how Dionne looked a lot better the first 3 years.

He's got five-hole-itis.
We've seen that around these parts too

With a five-point night, Adam Fox is now outscoring every player on the Flames not named Elias Lindholm.

Though he wasn't ever signing here, what a great find by the Flames and I'm glad they were willing to pull the trigger on a small defenceman rather than write him off.

And this is how he repays them

honestly the NHL needs to close that loophole

Such a simple solution.

If you offer a player a max rookie contract that he refuses to sign then you should retain his rights.

Thats fair to me. If as a team you can prove you did all you could to sign a player (max rookie deal fulfills that obligation) then you should retain their rights.

Not an NHL player, but I see Oilers prospect Dylan Holloway has 34 pts in 22 games, playing for U of Wisconsin in the NCAA, in just his second season in college (D+1). Sure, he plays with some pretty high-powered, productive players (including Cole Caulfield), but those are some eye-popping stats. Very annoying that another potential star player falls to the Oil.

Rocco m***** f****** Grimaldi with 4 goals.

Zibanejad with 6 more points.

Why can everyone else score so much?

It’s depressing, but he’s becoming one of the best defencemen in the league. The defensive side of his game developed very quickly.

i'm curious if any player in history ever had two 6 point nights in one season.
crazy he did it against the flyers 2 games in a row.
likely a record that will never be matched.

It was nice to watch someone go to the middle of the ice. If he were in a Flames uniform he would have had his ass stapled to the boards and ringed it around the runner a few times before losing control or putting a weak shot on goal.

Flames should pick up Hall for pennies on the dollar. He's due for a masssssssive regression. Kinda like Zibanejad.
